Hi there,

Out of curiosity, I want to know if some of you know some manga or anime that hasn't magic, aliens or stuff like that.

I mean, is it impossible to watch an anime series that hasn't girls with magic poles, that magically change their clothes while the camera revolves around them with all that shinning stars and hearts in the background? Or an anime series without weird alien paranoia?

And yes, I already know Hamtaro ( ) and Doraemon (his devices are technology, not magic).

There's plenty, I'm sure. It seems to encompass pretty much every genre there is.

Well, black lagoon is an obvious one.

And would you count Zombies as magic?

Because High School of the Dead is really rather good.

Chobits, Ichigo Mashimaro, Serial Experiments Lain, Air...

Do you only have a problem with magical girls ala Sakura Card Captors or just magic in genral? I could expand the list a little if it was the former.

You mean literally normal life? As in.. no futuristic ambients?

Love Hina, Beck, Ai Yori Aoshi, Fruits Basket (though they transform into animals xD), Death Note (aside from the shinigamis, it's really intese and real-like), Ichigo 100%, Honey and Clover.

And a lot more ;)

Hmm, ok... Would you count alchemy as magic? In Full Metal Alchemist alchemy is kinda like science and religion has a big gripe with it. I think the problem for you here is that alchemy sure looks a lot like magic... :P

There's also Wolf's Rain, it's like a myth or legend about the end of the world, and it involves wolves that can disguise themselves as humans. There's not much else "magical" about it though, and the word magic is never used (not that I can remember).

Why?

It would be more righteous to say "they are meant for girls, and wannabe tough guys" :P

Hmm, yeah...I worded that wrong. They're by no means bad animes, but I don't think they fit the OP's criteria...well technically they do, but you know what I mean.

Well, if you start going beyond kids anime/manga you will definitely find stuff that is more real-to-life.

Ghost in the Shell
Neon Genesis Evangelion

Those are two quality, entire anime series that I've watched and both of them don't have "magic poles" at all.

As for manga, if you are into creepy things, read Uzumaki.

The genre you're refering to is called "Ma shoujo" which means magical girl. No wonder you dislike anime when that's the most thing you watch xD

Try reading Shounen, Senien, Psychological, Social and Mystry mangas. Try watching Monster, Detective Conan, Ouran High School Host club, Great Teacher Onizuka, School Rumble, Nodame Cantabile, The wallflower and Honey and Clover. Those animes don't have magic nor characters with super natural powers in them. If you want a manga with no magic nor supernatural characters, try reading Bitter Virgin, Life and Chocolat with the mangas of the animes I've recommended above of course.

Cowboy Bebop? It's much more realistic compared to many animes, and has no magic that I can remeber (haven't seen every episode, though...). I'd also recommend Samurai Champloo.

Nope. Both are "Fantasy" animes because the setting is not real.

Well, yeah, I suppose. Still both are more realistic than many other animes, and don't have any kinds of magic...so I guess it wouldn't hurt for the TC to check them out.

Monster (74 eps) is a great example, it's a great psychological mystery/drama show.

Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (4 eps) is a great short action series with a bit of romance. I often recommend it to newbies.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie), time travelling, but it's done in a good way and it's very good.

5 centimeter per second (3 eps/movie), romantic drama... if you like it you should check out "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" (movie) too since they're both kinda similar, the seond one is kinda supernatural though.

Cowboy bebop is great. It's more futuristic, but I don't think there's any magic in it. The music flows very well with what's going on too.

Samurai X is set in a fantasy world and has supernatural characters in it so it doesn't count.

Slam Dunk is another good "realistic" anime. It's a classic.

Really? It was a long time I saw it so I didn't remember that, I guess the assasins might have been supernatural >.>

Just to make sure, are we talking about the mini-series or the long series.

Oh god... So many bugs in this website!

^^Yes. Shishio*sp* Arc, the guy with the cult arc, the poison water arc. It's a fantasy anime with characters who have supernatural powers. If you're talking about the movie then I'm talking about the main series and not the movie. How can you watch the movie without even watching the series? XD Did you understand anything? It's like skipping the whole show and watching the last episode from it.

I watched the OVA, the DVD version which is set in a paralell universe in away, it's only 2 hours long and in the time line I think it's before the show. Haven't seen the actual series and I agree that it would have been strange to watch the movie before the show :P

And the site is extra buggy today >_>

Bugs on the site are preventing me from quoting....

gamingqueen, HungryBunny is referring to the Samurai X:Trust and Betrayal which is a prequel to the Rurouni Kenshin tv series. The tv series is completely unrealistic, but Trust and Betryal which is what HungryBunny is referring to is very realistic in terms of samurai history and lack of "magic", gritty atmosphere, and believable characters.

I thought he was refering to the movie when he and Coreen had a kid. It might not be a realistic anime but it's one of the best shounens ever. I like it better than Naruto, Bleach and One Piece.

Black Lagoon, Kimikiss(I like my romance), Cowboy Bebop, Clannad. Seinen genre is the best imo.
