i just finished watchin eureka 7 all the way thru for the first time and i just came to a realization. the best animes usually leave u teary eyed at the end. they have this tendency to take you thru a bunch of emotions, u'll end up hating characters, then turn around to love them. they make you laugh, they make you genuinely feel for the characters, and make u care about what happens to them, and at some point u worry things wont turn out alright, and in some cases...things dont.

just think about some of ur favorite animes and tell me what u guys think, whether you agree or not, but some of the best animes i know do this: full metal alchemist, code geass, the world only god knows, cowboy bebop, eureka 7, omamori himari, gundam wing, and neon genesis evangeleon. i know a few animes that dont follow this too much and they are really good, but they are few and far in between and the majority of the ones that i remember do follow this pretty well...so tell me what u all think

Wow, I really do need to get off my ass and watch Eureka 7. Everytime I turn around someone is telling me how great it is. The synopsis of it doesn't interest me, but so many people seem to think its great so I suppose I'll give it a whirl.

On topic though, I definitely agree. Call me old school but still the two biggest emotional responses I have when thinking about anime are Pokemon' and Dragonball Z. I mean those two animes WERE my childhood. It makes me really sentimental thinking of both of them and how much they meant to me. Those shows were really a part of my life, and are part of me today.

Brother! Ha.

But yeah yu-gi-oh was one of those things that almost made it into that group with dragonball z and pokemon. It was the card game that everyone played when I was in middle school when we were just too embarrassed to mess with pokemon cards anymore in front of all the girls in our awkward adolescence. Yu-gi-oh seemed more mature, and it was in terms of how it looked as compared to pokemon. But it just didn't make as strong of an impact as the other two mainly because pokemon had already taken the "cool animal looking things that could fight" slot for me, and there was no way yu-gi-oh was going to take that away from pokemon. So it kind of got left out in the cold eventually. It was pretty cool though, I remember having some pretty badass card fights with yu-gi-oh. They were actually more exciting than the pokemon card fights I'll admit, but that's probably because the pokemon card battle system was constructed poorly compared to yu-gi-oh.

I find that usually when people are doing this the show is actually awful and rife with nauseating anime stereotypes. For example: DBZ, Naruto, Death Note, S-Cry-Ed, Elfen Lied, FMA, Bleach, Code Geass, Inuyasha, etc.

not gunna lie but Cowboy Bebop and the secret story of Spike Spiegel really interested me in the emotional sense. He is a BA character and yet he has a dark past which is also quite interesting. Same goes with Samurai Champloo and Mugen. Thats why i love Shinichirō Watanabe. He is an awesome story teller

I don't really get sad from any animes to be honest but I do sometimes feel emotional when I watch Hajime No Ippo because there are a lot of parts I can relate to. And it also happens to be my favorite anime so maybe tc's on to something.

I find the best anime are the ones that leave you speechless and/or confused and scared. The likes of Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, End of Evangelion fit both categories just fine.

Also, if you ended up "loving" any of the characters from Code Geass, then I've no idea of what to say because that's queer

Fullmetal Alchemist jumped to mind instantly. Such an incredibly series.

The death of one particular character stands out as one of anime's most tear worthy moments of all time.

Not a good rebuttal.

Perhaps a better one would have been to ask why do people such as deadbeatcobra find it acceptable to have emotions envoked from movies assumingly but not anime? I'm assuming this because by saying anime is just a cartoon he seems to be implying that you can't have an emotional response because there aren't real people on the screen, only drawings. My question would then be; why the hell does it matter? Why does it matter if its a real person on the screen or a drawing? The people within the movies may be real themselves, but their character is not, at least they are not relative to whoever the character is they're potraying. It's all the same, both anime and movies with real people in them are both telling a story or have elements that evoke emotion from us, the fact that one happens to be drawings make's no difference. The sadness one might feel is indifferent to whether or not the eye can recognize if they're seeing a real person or a drawing, the emotions are still the same.

All that said, he's trollin' anyway. No more food shall be given.

How exactly was that not a good rebuttal? Cartoons, movies and books are just a format to tell a story. If you can have an emotional attachment to a character in a book, you can have the same attachment to a character in an anime.

It's because anime is to a large extent not cartoons, at least not cartoons in the way American cartoons are. There are plenty of animes that are just comedy shows and are comparable to shows like The Simpsons, but there are also a lot of serious anime (e.g. Neon Genesis Evangelion) that can get you very emotionally connected to the characters. I enjoy both kinds of anime really, the more and less serious ones. I'm not sure I've ever actually cried during an anime (or manga), but they have provoked some deep emotional responses.

Good animes have consistent plots and actual characters (not mary sues). By a consistent plot, i mean it shouldn't be like neon genesis evangelion which had more plotholes than a slice of swiss cheese. And by mary sues it shouldn't have characters like Yagami Light who basically has no character flaws.

there is this series of books that id been reading...they are by RA Salvatore...they follow drizzt do'urden and his comapanions...there are more than 20 books in the series and they cover about 20 or so years of time...in this books u really get to "know" the characters...some of them fall in love...some of them have problems and breakdowns...they have real emotions..and over the 20 years u get to see them grow up and grow together..and after all of that seeing some of them die really has a profound hurt...its amazing story telling and great plot and character development...and end the end of the last part of his books so far i wanted to QQ cause i didnt want to see people die...(mind u i read to the end and am avidly waiting the next part to finish) the same can be said about any medium...movies and anime can do the same thing...and video games could as well (tho ive only had that feeling once...mgs3 was just amazing) and just because something is a cartoon doesnt mean that its any lesser of a medium than the others...people cry about movies all the time...and its the same idea...so maybe there arnt real actors on screeen...but that shouldnt matter that much...and plus...just because u dont have the same reaction doesnt mean that its ridiculous that anyone else does...

I don't agree. There is no doubt that the best animes can can put you on emotional roller coasters. But that doesn't mean you end up crying. I loved Tenchi Muyo, Gantz, Death Note, Bleach, Hellsing, and many others but I never cried watching them. However I was always on the edge of my seat. The only animes I ever cried watching were DBZ when Frieza killed Vegeta, and during Inuyasha cause thats more of a love story.

I agree. That's one of the big reasons I prefer anime to drama tv. Like Friends, Seinfield, etc. I just can't relate those guys (Sitcoms).

No, he isn't. A cartoon is a drawing or animation meant primarily for comedy.

i just finished watchin eureka 7 all the way thru for the first time and i just came to a realization. the best animes usually leave u teary eyed at the end. they have this tendency to take you thru a bunch of emotions, u'll end up hating characters, then turn around to love them. they make you laugh, they make you genuinely feel for the characters, and make u care about what happens to them, and at some point u worry things wont turn out alright, and in some cases...things dont.

just think about some of ur favorite animes and tell me what u guys think, whether you agree or not, but some of the best animes i know do this: full metal alchemist, code geass, the world only god knows, cowboy bebop, eureka 7, omamori himari, gundam wing, and neon genesis evangeleon. i know a few animes that dont follow this too much and they are really good, but they are few and far in between and the majority of the ones that i remember do follow this pretty well...so tell me what u all think

I agree...although most of the times its because the anime was great all along, but then the ending sucked. for example: full metal alchemist...my favorite anime, but the ending was just terrible and then there was the movie and I was hoping that it would have a better ending...but it was even worse...
