The MacBook. I have one; I recommend it and I can safely say there's no finer laptop around.

Dell came out with a new laptop line, Studio. Its has the same design as the XPS line but cheaper. They start at $799.99. Customize it to your liking. I m thinking of picking it up for University use. Real nice looking laptop.

If you don't care about gaming or processor heavy programs get a UMPC. You can carry it around extremely easily, and use it for notes, internet, email, etc. I think the MSI Wind which is about to hit is the best choice, but the Eee PC is great, and later this year Dell is putting out a pretty cheap model. I'd get one of those for college.
