What flagship manga/anime series would you recommend to someone like me, who is open minded but not too intrested in the genre? I like Eureka 7, Hellsing , Neon Geneis Evangelion and the manga from Tokyo Pop on Kingdom Hearts (IMO this game was my childhood and people would make fun of me knowing how much I love it seeing how "tough" I am today). Anime features that I liked were Spirited Away, Paprika, My Neighbour Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo.

I liked Memories. Also, Ninja Scroll and Akira.

Yes, I realize these are all examples of old, ultra-mainstream anime movies that hit the States ... I offer no apologies.

Also, Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy Bebop, both the series and the movies.

Fullmetal Alchemist. There is no other answer.

100+ episodes of awesomeness, and defintely for one who isn't really into the general... conventions of anime.

It was interesting in some parts, but mostly borring and tried too hard to be "teh intellects". I was completley baffled with some of the lil slugger attacks.

On September 28, 2007, two notes written with Latin characters stating "Watashi wa Kira dess", or "I am Kira" (私はキラです, watashi wa Kira desu?)[90] were found near the unidentified remains of a Caucasian male in Belgium. Nothing was found on or near the victim besides these two notes.[91] A senior at the Franklin Military Academy in Richmond, Virginia, United States was suspended after being caught possessing a replica "Death Note" notebook with the names of fellow students.[92] In South Carolina, U.S. in 2008, school officials seized a "Death Note" notebook from a Hartsville Middle School student. District officials linked the notebook to the anime/manga. The notebook listed seven students' names. The school planned a disciplinary hearing and contacted the seven students' parents.[93] In Gadsden, Alabama, U.S. two sixth grade boys were arrested for possessions of "Death Notes" that listed names of several staff members and fellow students. According to Etowah County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Lanny Handy, the notebook was found the previous afternoon by a staffer. The students were suspended from the county's schools. The students, their parents, and school officials had met with Handy and a junior probation officer.[94] In Gig Harbor, Washington, U.S. one middle school student was expelled and three were suspended on May 14, 2008 for having their own "Death Note" books.[95] -Straight from Wikipedia under Copycat crimes

Perfect Blue is a psychological film. It can be interpreted in many ways. Tokyo Godfathers is about life. Spirited Away is the best of them all IMO though. After all, it won an Oscar award.

Perfect Blue is great. 5cm per second was awful. If you're into manga, and it sounds like you enjoy Miyazaki, I'd recommend buying the Nausicaa series. You can get it for 5$ a pop on Amazon (I think there's 6 books in the english version total). They're about 100-200 pages each, too. Rich story, good drawings, not much more you could ask for :P

Yuck. I'm a 14 year old with the mind of a pre-college kid (th douche who thinks he's the center of the world just because he jus graduated from High School). Care to recommend something a little less prepubescent? Because I'm pretty sure thats the target bracket for both those shows. Suprised that there hasnt been any Narutos.

I would suggest Ergo Proxy or Witch Hunter Robin, after reading through much of this thread. Death Note is a very long series that started off well and fizzled out, for me... Not worth the time investment in my opinion.

Death note is okay. But I think you should try manga other than anime. Manga usually follows the better storyline. I usually go read some R+V chapters or Full Metal Alchemist. Sometimes vampire knight.
