http://politicalwire.com/archives/2009/05/13/rnc_to_rebrand_democrats_as_socialists.html

A RNC member tells Roger Simon that when committee members meet in an extraordinary special session next week, they will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the "Democrat Socialist Party."

RNC Chairman Michael Steele didn't want the meeting to be held, but members exercised "a rarely used party rule that allows any 16 RNC members from 16 different states to demand a special meeting" forcing Steele's hand.

"A further comeuppance -- a vote of 'no confidence' in Steele -- is not being contemplated, I am informed, because Steele's opponents in the RNC have already won a major victory by forcing him to accept greater controls on how he spends party funds."

Wow, honestly, that's just pathetic, in my opinion. Talk about irl straw manning...

And to think about how bad we supposedly were when they were in control. Got to love those Neo-Cons.

It seems if they really had that power, they could call it "Hitler's Wild and Crazy Baby Killing Party".

Is this even news?

Repubs have been beating the "socialist" drum for a long time, especially the AM radio nutjobs (Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, OReilly, etc)

This reminds me of the cartoon the was in the paper the other day. It was an elephant saying how everyone left the Republican party and at the end of his bubble is says "except...for you..." and across from the elephant there was a guy with "Far Right" on his shirt say "Bummer, want to go gun shopping?"

It would make more sense and be better for the Reps. to get their feces together and come up with a strong leader with real conservative ideals.

What Americans deem socialism is usually nowhere near it. Conservatives need to realise that there are alternatives to their ideology, and that there is plenty in between them and real socialism.

Oleg_Huzwog

One of the Republican's problems is that those Republicans who lost in the last congressional election ... were some of the newer folk and best to lead them someplace new (well relatively). Of the Republican's left who still have offices are mostly longer serving, seem less likely to change (since they're still getting elected) and are heavily invested in social issues like immigration, religion, abortion and so on. Those issues aren't going to get them anywhere...

Unfortunately for everyone each party is also the only viable alternative to the other so as long as that stays the same they're each bound to win again some day.

When Americans speak of socialism they are usually referring to European Socialism. It all depends on your point of reference.

I'm starting to think that when right wingers speak of socialism they mean using taxes for anything besides the military and the jobs of elected officials.

Steele proved himself to be spineless when he apologized to Limbaugh for speaking his mind.

When you have the RNC leader apologizing to a radio pundit, that should indicate who is the real leader of the party.

It's no wonder the GoP is floundering on the brink of extinction.

Their spiritual leader is Rush Limbaugh - a radio-talk show host who makes fun of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's tremors...

Their "official" leader is Michael Steele, a flavor-of-the-month reponse to the minority vacuum in their party.

Seriously, as long as these guys are in charge, they've got no hope.

Sadly it's more like fear mongering FTW. I guarantee you people will be persuaded by this simple name change. Granted I'm sure most of them are already republicans, but there's going to be some independents who switch over to republicans because "I ain't votin' for no communist!".

Permit me to put my crazy cynic hat on...

What if we had no taxes? What's the consequence? We've gone decades with spending more than is taken in via tax revenue. Is "no tax" simply an extension of the mindset we've been operating under all along?

The only way I see your scenario playing out is if Dems agree to call themselves socialists.

Otherwise nothing would be different as Repubs have been calling dems socialists for a long time now.

That was actually really interesting. Fox News that has been nothing but hostile towards before no was suddenly like "Disension is good!" and other crap. Then MSNBC who usually is supportive of protesters decided to go all Daily Show on the protest and just call everyone "Tea Baggers" Then we found out that Rachel Maddow should never try to be funny.

I think the government borrowing that has been done up until now would not be available if in fact there was no potential future income to back it up. Also inflation would be a PIA.

I haven't heard of the DNC holding a meeting (against the DNC chair's will) trying to get everyone to use "NEO" in front of the wordconservative.
