Son of Orange County pastor Rick Warren commits suicide The youngest son of Pastor Rick Warren, a world-famous Orange County evangelical pastor, has committed suicide, according to a statement sent by Warren and his wife to his congregation. Matthew Warren, 27, the son of the leader of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, died after battling depression for much of his life, the statement said. Matthew was an incredibly kind, gentle and compassionate man. He had a brilliant intellect and a gift for sensing who was most in pain or most uncomfortable in a room. Hed then make a beeline to that person to engage and encourage them, the statement said. The statement said that the suicide followed an evening spent with Warren and his wife, Kay. Kay and Ive been privileged to hold your hands as you faced a crisis or loss, the statement said. Today we need your prayers for us.

sos will he go to heaven or hell?

A person can struggle with mental illness and be a Christian at the same time. Suicide is not a good way to "finish the race well" as Apostle Paul puts it but families such as the Warrens need sympathy and comfort during a time like this, not a theology lesson.

Notice the "but" conjunction which shows that I am not saying we should address suicide in the way I was proposing.
He is giving an example to debate a question. chaplainDMK
The answer would depend upon the theological persuasion of the Christian. Some would quickly say yes, some would quickly say no. I, personally, am going to be apprehensive and say that it is possible though not probable that a person commit suicide and go to heaven. Regardless, it is simply not a good thing to do to oneself.

Answering the OP's question: If the Bible's right, he will go to hell. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm pretty sure there's something in the book that says suicide=eternal hell as a fleshy tree or something.

That's sad.  Also, I know what the Bible says, but I can't imagine a good god of any sort would send a person to hell simply for offing themselves after a troubled life.

Is anyone else a little bit disturbed by this thread? A tragedy like this happens, and the question that gets brought up is if the guy is going to hell? Maybe I'm being too cynical, but this is coming off as just an excuse for some religion bashing.

He will go to hell, while Hitler who believed in God and probablly repented at the end will go to heaven. Alongside the vast mayority of the worlds prison population. I'm actually contemplating going to hell. Darwin, gandhi, buddha and a couple of other figures have to be there... that will be nice.

I agree that it's not the best answer, but you have to understand that clinical depression is a very very very painful thing if it's severe. I found it infuriating when I found some "Christian" site commenting on the issue of the sinfulness of suicide and said that depression is no excuse, apparently the sun will always come after the rain. Well the sad thing with depression is that that's not a given, a clinically depressed person has so little will for anything, they have a hard time getting up in the morning. They just don't know why they even should bother. Even if everything is good they are just finding bad things in it, or anticipating bad things. It's persistant, all-encopasing and crushing. And I'm not laucnching that at you or anyone faithful, I'm just pointing it out that depression is not just being sad.

Killing yourself is unfair for those around you who love you, since they will struggle with their loss. So he's probably gone to hell.

I agree with everything you stated. While I have never struggled with any long-term depression one of my best friends has. Trying to be a good friend to him when all he does is look negatively at all things in life has taken patience at times, but through him I have learned to be sympathetic to those with clinical depression.

This is random, but why don't we offer doctor assisted suicide? Like if I have a terminal cancer, or if I'm a paraplegic and no longer want to live.

I agree it should be offered for the first two choices you list

However, I don't think any right minded medical person would offer this for depression. Depression is a mental illness that can be treated with medication and therapy. Depressed people who may have attempted suicide can live long happy lives if they get the right help.

EDIT: I mean, there is treatment resistant depression; but this isnt' the norm.

Oh well of course. I mean I would assume the average physician would be able to tell if someone is speaking out in emotion and "not all there". I'm simply saying in regards to ending suffering -- I personally wouldn't want to live if I was a vegetable. I did a quick google search it's legal in two states: Oregon and Washington.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_suicide_in_the_United_States

*Only applies to a deadly illness. A paraplegic wouldn't apply.

I have no idea if heaven exists, but I hope Rick Warren's son is finally at peace.

Depression can rid you of any sorts of thoughts or feelings and emotion. So even if his family and friends weren't in his mind when he did it, it wasn't necessarily because he didn't care how they felt after he was gone.

There were attempts to pass physician assisted suicide in Connecticut and Massachusetts recently. Massachusetts voted it down in a referendum on election day 2012 (I think it was an overwhelming vote against it, like 70% or so) and the bill in Connecticut died in the Public Health Committee after the committee decided not to vote on the bill (due to lack of support for it) by the deadline.

Most disability rights groups oppose physician assisted suicide because it devalues disabled people and they fear that disabled people might be denied healthcare, stigmatized or pressured into committing physician assisted suicide.

I remember one story in Oregon (which allows physician assisted suicide), where a patient had some illness and requested a treatment, but the Oregon state Medicaid system replied that they would not pay for that treatment, though they would pay for his suicide.

Why doesn't the devil have a say? Why does god decide to send someone to hell rather than the two have a meaningful discussion on who gets the dude? A little one sided if you ask me.

Rick Warren is a pastor who is known for writing a book, I think it's called "The Purpose Driven Life" or something like that. In 2009 Rick Warren gave the benediction (blessing) at President Obama's inauguration and in 2008 Warren moderated a question and answer discussion about faith between Sens. Obama and McCain.
