Akira Toriyama, primarily known for Dragonball, but worked on alot of other stuff like Dr. Slump and Dragon Quest has passed away.

I've been playing Chrono Trigger during lunch breaks. Seems like a decent game so far. Never really got into Dragonball nor Dragon Quest. RIP
Damn it felt like a knife just went through my chest when I saw the headlines. I was just looking up the newest Dragon Ball Super chapters. It felt so out of nowhere with all the projects he had going on.
That sucks. 68 isn't exactly young, but it's not that old either. Always hoped he'd be around longer to continue making masterpieces.
Ignoring this person, as it's social media clout chasing, but in the West some of his designs could be construed as racist. Namely Mr.Popo, which they turned blue in Kai, and it just looked stupid.
Probably the great irony of that is that Dragonball has massive, massive appeal to black people and generally POC. Latin countries are basically a meme at this point.
Fun fact, when Super aired 5 years go (which again le_ironically had very little to no involvement from Toriyama other than basic input), they held illegal events on the streets for the final episodes.
This had a reactive effect on the teams in Japan (including Toriyama) where they inserted chanting into the Broly movie in response to Latin America.

Most of Black Twitter is defending Toriyama from racism accusations. Some are saying that Mr. Popo is based on a Hindu god. While others are saying his art style evolved and the way he drew black people changed in the '90s.
I've seen black DBZ fans say they see parallels between the Saiyan story and their own history. Basically, a white slave owner (Freeza) enslaves a race of people (Saiyans), uses derogatory racial slurs to dehumanize them, and eventually a Saiyan rises up to whoop his arse.
Dragon Ball is a piece of art that transcends cultural boundaries. It's loved almost everywhere in the world, whether it's Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Africa or Australia... Well, everywhere except Antarctica.
@DEVILinIRON: Fun fact, the guy who voices him in The West also voices Vegeta.
He's talking to himself here.

It looks stupid and is stupid.
Mr. Popo isnt even a human... people looking for problems that aren't even there.

As I said, this person should be ignored, it's easy baiting from a nobody trying to piggyback a legend.
Kai is ok. It's good in the sense it's condensed for quick re-watches after a few years, and has some nice new tracks of its own, but aside from that don't like it much. It adds a bunch of digital effects and cleans up the images too much and removes a lot of the filler to a detriment.
The original one we grew up on as well has it's own problems in that, they purposefully never allowed any scenes to be silent, always dialogue/music inserted where otherwise there was none. Certain scenes like Trunks arriving is miles better in the Japanese OG.
In honour of Akira Toriyama, there's going to be a Dragon Ball theme park... in Saudi Arabia.
