[QUOTE="lemonfreshpanda"][QUOTE="Carlos_Santana"]Well, Jimmy Page is far from that title for the best JUST in Rock music. Duane Allman could do just about everything Jimmy Page can, except better. Syd Barrett (Pink Floyd), Forrest Richard Betts (The Allman Brothers Band) and Dewey Bunnell (America) are the best guitarist songwriters in my opinion. Jimi Hendrix is far far more better a guitarist when he plays Blues music. Electric Rock Guitarist: Duane Allman Acoustic Rock Guitarist: Steve Howe (YES) - Classically trained guitarist Best songwriting guitarist - Forrest Richard Betts (The Allman Brothers Band) - His best songs are too long to be played on the radio Some good guitarists: Syd Barrett, Derek Trucks, Jimi Hendrix, and of course Stevie Ray Vaughan

 Dewey Bunnel?!

He's not the most skilled when it comes to playing solos, but he isn't a bad songwriters. He has songs above the simple Minor Major chords.

[QUOTE="ithilgore2006"][QUOTE="quiglythegreat"][QUOTE="lemonfreshpanda"] But that doesn't make him a great guitarists.

It absolutely does. Yngwie was talented in terms of moving his fingers fast, but he couldn't write a goo tune at all. That is why he's terrible.

He's not a terrible guitarist. He's a very fast ok guitarist, and a poor composer of music. It's the same deal with Dragonforce, they have really fast guitarwork, yet they play with little skill at all.

People call them fast, yet, they can't play their own licks slow.

WTF?

Making fun of Yngwie. Ynqie was fast, and he had that "I Am A Viking" song, which totally rocked, but....there are better. But who am I to judge? I don't play guitar. I like Satriani, Greenwood, Howe, Knopfler and Hackett. I couldn't choose between them.

I'm actually talking about his guitar playing. His vocals have never been my style. Some people really love it, but for me it's just a way to organize his rhythm playing.

No, he is not terrible. He is oustanding. But you don't like him very much. Heck, I don't really like him, but plenty of credible people point out that he does actually have a good sense of melody. It's not my style, but if people find it's their thing, good for them. I'll take Billy Gibbons sub-par chops and monster tone over Malmsteen any day.

Music is about speed. This is why Malmsteen sucks. He only plays fast. He doesn't know how to do anything else. Music is about switching up the pace of the music in a way that sounds excellent. Yngwie Malmsteen is an atrocious guitarist in this respect, at least.

I agree that Alex Lifeson and B.B. King don't get enough attention, but George Thorogood sounds mediocre to me.  I've also been to a Peter Frampton concert, and I don't think he's anything special.

George Thorogood is somewhat mediocre, but I don't care. I love the man's tone.
As for Frampton, sweet tone, great sense of melody.

If you ask me, Hammett is only considered a good guitarist because he's in Metallica. Tony Iommi, on the other hand...that thar is a rock guitar god. Not bad for a guy with two finger tips.

I don't think my decision saying that SRV was the greatest guitarist was 'based off the delusion of talent that MTV has given me', it's just that I was sure that this thread was for rock and blues based guitar players... all of those players in those vids are good, I just don't think that's what the TC meant. That said, Derek Trucks needs more love...

I saw Derek Trucks in concert with Eric Clapton....I can't believe I'm saying this but he is better (technically speaking) than Clapton. And SRV is also one of my favorites. But Jimmy Page is far from the best.

[QUOTE="Carlos_Santana"]Just to show how...inaccurate this thread is, here are some videos of great guitarists that are rarely mentioned

When you watch those videos, ignore whatever delusion of talent that MTV/Vh1 put in your head (hopefully very little)blackslim3000

This guy is probably one of my favorites. Hes not amazing, but hes good nonetheles. (I couldnt find a video of him performing live.)

Oh, Robert Quine is another great guitarist...

Ron Asheton is a very good guitarists considering how little punk guitarists try to push themselves.

Clapton lost his chops a decade ago. And Jimmy Page is one of my idols. Don't you diss him!

He's a great acoustic bluesman. He's not as good at electric....well, nevermind that last statement
