I don't think my decision saying that SRV was the greatest guitarist was 'based off the delusion of talent that MTV has given me', it's just that I was sure that this thread was for rock and blues based guitar players... all of those players in those vids are good, I just don't think that's what the TC meant. That said, Derek Trucks needs more love...

I saw Derek Trucks in concert with Eric Clapton....I can't believe I'm saying this but he is better (technically speaking) than Clapton. And SRV is also one of my favorites. But Jimmy Page is far from the best.

Clapton lost his chops a decade ago. And Jimmy Page is one of my idols. Don't you diss him!

He's a great acoustic bluesman. He's not as good at electric....well, nevermind that last statement

Wait, are you talking about Clapton, Page, or Trucks?

Yeah, I saw Eric Clapton and Derek Trucks playing together, and that's the same conclusion I came to. Trucks played better then Clapton because he hasn't peaked yet though, and Clapton peaked a long time ago. And yeah, I think that Jimmy Page is the most overrated guitarist of all time.

Just to show how...inaccurate this thread is, here are some videos of great guitarists that are rarely mentioned
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xZw9D9c18E If you watch this, wait until 01:20. That's when it get's going
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9efHwnFAkuA Wait about 30 seconds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPfZVflJdp0 Flawless....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1i_2HYmJkA

When you watch those videos, ignore whatever delusion of talent that MTV/Vh1 put in your head (hopefully very little)Carlos_Santana

Here is someone who I found a while ago and am floored by the music he creates.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJFnqDy8VWQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip111lXjDSs

And that is just the tip of the iceberg... I really need to buy some of his albums.

The guys you posted were amazing.

You're going through a Led Zeppelin phase. It's only temporary though. When I went through my Zeppelin phase I thought that they were the best band in the world (tied with the Who), and then I Stevie Ray Vaughan play. He made Jimmy Page look thoroughly mediocre, and I wasn't that impressed with Led Zeppelin anymore. Don't get me wrong, I still like them, but I wouldn't put them on a top ten bands list...

Agreed,

No. That title
goes to Jimi Hendrix. Eric Clapton is quite overrated, too.

Jimmy Page is overrated, but there are far more overrated people. Yngwie Malmsteen comes to mind...

Jimmy may not be the best when it comes to technical guitar playing, but he definitely knows how to write a good song.

On a side note, the guitar solo at the end of this song shows how
original a guitar player Johnny Greenwood is. Not to mention the one in Lucky and Paranoid Android... It's also quite cool to watch him play.

Yes, I am a huge Stevie Ray Vaughan fan. That doesn't make me love Jimmy Page any less. Are his chops the greatest? No. I don't give a crap. Dude, I respect your opinion, but I don't need to hear about how I only like something because I'm going through a phase. You don't know a single thing about me as a person. I hate Steve Ray Vaughan. Well, I hate most technically-proficient guitarists. I prefer guitarists who have a good ear, and can write a song, and in that sense, Jimmy Page is one of the best. SRV to me can't write a song, in my opinion, but I'm not a big fan of blues, either. The same goes for Yngwie Malmsteen, except replace blues with metal.

I went through a Led Zeppelin "phase" as well. There are people on here I bet can vouch for that. I thought they were the greatest of all time and I would always love them. Once you listen to one bad too much you find that your old beliefs can be actually wrong. I still really like Zeppelin's work, it is excellent music made by people with superb skill.

Jimmy Page ripped off a lot of other people's stuff and never gave credit for it. Even the opening riff in StH is a ripoff (heard this is a third-party video I own about Led Zeppelin). He is not the greatest guitarist, there are many other who are more versatile and skilled but he is top-shelf.

Johnny Greenwood, for the most part.

Anybody notice anything wrong with the text? It seems like I can't write anything more than two sentences without it being scrunched up to the left.

That video shows how good Johnny Greenwood is at getting little bleepy noises out of his guitar.

When he's actually playing a solo, he's descent. The playing in that song provides a good climax, but it doesn't stand very well on its own.
Edit: This is all opinion of course.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Johnny Greenwood is the best guitarist, but as a musician he's brilliant in his own right (I respect the fact that he mastered multiple instruments then the fact that he can play guitar well).

Ah. I would disagree. He can't play with speed anymore, but he still has that good ol' Clapton sound, and he can play with as much feel as he always has.

the title says best, not favorite

but seriously, some of my favorites are Dimebag Darrell, Dave Mustaine, and Tony Iommi.  I don't think anyone's written as many brilliant riffs as Iommi.

But he can't rightly be a favorite if no one's heard him.

the title says best, not favorite

but seriously, some of my favorites are Dimebag Darrell, Dave Mustaine, and Tony Iommi.  I don't think anyone's written as many brilliant riffs as Iommi.

Some great guitarists you have listed. I don't care what anyone says, Dave Mustaine is twice the guitarist Kirk Hammett ever was.

[QUOTE="Greatgone12"][QUOTE="lemonfreshpanda"][QUOTE="EboyLOL"][QUOTE="lemonfreshpanda"][QUOTE="EboyLOL"][QUOTE="Carlos_Santana"]I saw Derek Trucks in concert with Eric Clapton....I can't believe I'm saying this but he is better (technically speaking) than Clapton. And SRV is also one of my favorites. But Jimmy Page is far from the best.

Okay, now, listen, I don't mind that you find them overrated. I was kidding more than anything.

But your statement about me going through a Led Zeppelin "phase" is insulting.

Don't assume you have any idea why I like the artists I do.

Hey, greatgone12. I finally remembered who the most overrated guitarist is: Kirk Hammett. And I'm a far bigger Metallica fan than you are.

No one. Everyone is good at something, and it all sums up to the musical taste they create.

Rock Music is my favorite Genre, but I find this thread to be flawed in the sense that it doesn't count for classical guitarists. Classical music is far more complex and skilled, yet few classical guitarists such as John Williams or Andres Segovia aren't even mentioned. Those musicians are what make me ashamed of MY guitar-playing skills and what make me try to become better.
