2008 "If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won't go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed."

Feb 2012 "The president tells us that without his intervention things in Detroit would be worse," Romney wrote. "I believe that without his intervention things there would be better."

April 2012 "The only economic success that President Obama has had is because he followed Mitt Romney's advice." HUH?

This is actually pretty hilarious, and the sad thing is most people voting for him will just ignore this.

I'm from around Detroit, and I can tell the bailouts have helped immensly with getting Ford, GM, and especially Chrysler back on their feet.

Ford didn't take a bailout and Chrysler was bought out by an Italian company.

He's not going to say "Obama saved the auto industry!". If a politician has a talking point which isn't going to lead to much of a backlash, he's going to use it, especially when his audience has proven itself to be easy to mislead and misinform.

I'm not a Romney fan at all (I'm voting for Gary Johnson) but if you read that first article he said GM needed structured bankruptcy which would also allow them to restructure UAW contracts.

After GM blew through $39 billion Obama gave them....they declared bankruptcy and restructured the UAW contracts.

So Romney was right.

From around Detroit, yet you think Ford got a bailout? Ford made good decisions in the few years before the the recession started (Fords "restructuring plan"). Had they not, they could have very well been in the same boat with GM and Chrysler.

Agreed! Here are the best parts:

  • Romney's "lie" was from some aide, not Romney.
  • Romney's op-ed piece in your first link was him saying we shouldn't keep afloat a failed business model. He was saying we should instead let them go bankrupt so they can restructure things to create something more realistic and sustainable... which, as KC_Hokie points out, is exactly what they ended up doing.
  • As several others pointed out, you think Ford was part of it, which is a pretty boneheaded mistake for someone who claims to be from Detroit.

Here's some info for all those in the thread who seem confused on whether Ford actually took money or not. And it is from an unquestionably reliable source.

The Automotive Industry Financing Program gave $79.69 billion to GM, GMAC and Chrysler in bailouts.

Ford received $0.

I know all 3 came to the Canadian government and basically black mailed us. They DEMANDED a bailout (almost as much as they asked the US gov) or they would shut down factories.

Wasn't part of the bailout program (Automotive Industry Financing Program)

They were offered loans from the government as part of the Department of Energy's 'green' energy pet project (Department of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program). This took place 6+ months after the GM and Chrysler bailouts and was a totally different program. And it was $5.9 billion in loans not $23 billion.

Ford never asked for a bailout and was profitable when that government loan went through in late 2009.

No. They were already profitable when they took the loan. They didn't need it.

They aren't retarded...if the government offers huge cheap loans to any corporation that corporation would be idiotic not to take it.

You didn't read the Forbes article. did you?

But wait a minute. OK, Ford didn?t file bankruptcy or get bailed out by Uncle Sam, but didn?t it receive $5.9 billion in low-cost government loans in 2009 to overhaul its factories and bring out more fuel-efficient technology? What would have happened to Ford if Congress hadn?t authorized taxpayer money to fund that $25 billion Energy Department program during a moment of crisis for the industry?

It?s hard to say, of course, but the fact is, with the aid of that taxpayer loan and a well-timed bank loan of $23 billion, Ford managed to tiptoe past the graveyard and avoid bankruptcy. Since then, it has run its business well and reduced its debt from $33.6 billion to $12.2 billion.Forbes Article

I may have misread it, but Ford still needed money due to not having enough of their own, even if they didn't take bailout money earlier and they are still in debt.

In 2008, he said in an article: "Let detroit go bankrupt" (NYTimes http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/19/opinion/19romney.html?_r=1 ) And now he says: "I pushed the idea of a managed bankruptcy," Romney said. "And finally, when that was done, and help was given, the companies got back on their feet. So I'll take a lot of credit for the fact that this industry's come back." (Interview with WEWS-TV in Cleveland) How hypcritical.
