My current roommate and I have been best friends. Up until summer 2011. He has other stuff going on and we barely talk or hang out anymore... is it wrong to just move out on him? I have another friend who needs a roommate right now and I am tempted to go live with someone who actually hangs out with me... and the cost is cheaper too lol. Anyway, is it ok to ditch him and leave him in need of a roommate this or is this a bad move?

If you want to move out then you should..especially if it's cheaper; you should at least wait until he finds a new roommate, though

I should wait for him to find a new roomie. But the place I'll be moving into isn't as nice as my current place (you get what you pay for I guess). However, I'm not waiting around for him to find a new roommate at the expense of my own happiness.

Sure but you should give him to the end of the rental period to find a new place/room mate

How is not talking to him at the expense of your happiness, this isn't gross misconduct on his part, he has no obligation to talk to you.

You and he agree to split expenses in a shared living space, that doesn't make you obligated to hang out with each other. Move if you want, but in my view it's kind of a dick move to potentially put him into a financially tight spot over such a petty reason.

Maybe I forgot to add that we were awesome friends for about the past three years. And now we barely talk, never hang out. It's lame... I would much rather room with someone I can chill with and, I dunno, actually be friends with.

If you want to. However, I don't see the need to hang out with your roommate everyday. I realize your good friends, but sometimes, being apart, is healthy.

That's how it goes sometimes. Hell, I've had the same best friend since early childhood and even when we shared a place together there were times where didn't hang out and barely spoke two words to each other.

Haha I guess I'm not getting the message across... it's not that we haven't talked/hung out in a week. It's been like this for months. It reminds me of when I lived in dorms and got assigned a random roommate that I didn't know.

Give him notice in advance. It's uncool to leave someone struggling just because you don't hang out any more.

Have you made an effort to bring back that friendship instead of just moving out? by all means do as you please, though moving out seems a bit drastic over something like that :P

I live in an apartment with one of my good friends (he is also my landlord). I've been friends with him for the past 8 years and even then we really only see each other once or twice a week. We worked out our shifts at work well, we see enough of each other to remain friends, but not too much to get annoyed with each other.

Well it's not very fun to live in total silence with someone. I'd rather live with someone who I also consider a friend and who wants to hang out. Not only that, when the total silence also starts to turn into little passive aggressive things, it just makes me want to leave that much more.

Agreed. You didn't move in to be bros, you moved in because you know you can depend on eachother. Just because he doesn't talk to you as much doesn't mean you should drop him for a new roomate right away

OT you sound like a girl. "Why doesn't he spend time with me?!" To me your roommate sounds cool. I could live with someone like that. Its kinda like living by yourself except once in awhile he comes raids your fridge and uses the toilet.

yeeeah, except when you used to be best buds and now your former best bud is a passive aggressive "i'm god's gift to the world and everyone else is stupid" kind of person who feels he is too good to acknowledge you. F all your opinions,

Well, from what I've read, it seems that there is a pretty big rift between you and your former friend. You should try talking to him though... being "best buds" for years and then it all going to **** sucks, but maybe you can salvage something. If not, just move out. I get what it's like when friends start treating you like crap, and you don't have to put up with it. If there's nothing that can be done to repair the friendship, just get out and move on. Otherwise it will just escalate into something bad and regrettable things might happen.

Thank you... one of the few decent, reasonable responses to my post. Yes, I've tried the whole salvaging thing, only to be blown off. And fine, I would never move out without saying anything. I have to give a month's notice to get my security deposit back anyway. And you're right I don't have to put up with his passive agressive BS... I'm not tethered to this kid. He's had a lot of crappy friend moments in the past and he talks so much crap about other people it's unreal... I guess finding out that he also talks crap about me was a breaking point. Thought I'd be immune to it being such a good "friend" but guess not!

Ah... correct me if I'm wrong, but did you guys have a falling out because you discovered he was saying things about you behind your back? and that has lead to the non talking? At the beginning you made it sound like you guys just weren't really hanging out anymore. If this is the case, ask him if you were doing something to bug him. Maybe he didn't feel comfortable confronting you about it and had to vent to other friends. Not saying it's definitely your fault though... some people just love talking ****, and that's because they have issues, not you. And honestly it's just best to remove yourself from people like that.

I can, I have a friend that wants me to move in because he can barely afford his place. I guess I'm torn because it is not anywhere close to being as nice as my current place and it's a lot farther from my job and school. It is cheaper though.

and to fluffykins, I think when someone complains about you flossing, brushing, and using mouth rinse every night before bed, they just enjoy talking crap, because I don't see how that could possibly ACTUALLY annoy someone. He used to go on all the time about his former roommate for leaving floss in the garbage can instead of flushing it. One time a piece was hanging over the edge so he took it and shoved it under his door. How passive aggressive can you get? He'd also go on about all the health food the roommate had too... as if it affected him in any way.

In a way you sound like me TC. However the best thing is to talk about it. Whenever you have your shot, make him sit down with you and be open. Talk about what's going on and get intel and find a resolution. Don't ditch because it is absolutely not worth it!
