My best friend moved home to Japan in 1999, it's all good though, we still talk (not as much as we'd like but ..) & we visit each other from time to time, he was even the best man in my wedding last year, friendships never die, unless you want them to
In my opinion, the smartest thing to do is to test the friendship before he goes and make sure it fails. You'll get mad at each other and stop being friends. That way you won't care that he's gone :) I'm sorry if this doesn't help you but that's the only way I know to deal with this kind of situation.
When i was 14 my best friend moved to scotland (i live in England),it changed my life quite a bit,just be yourself and don't dwell on it,that's really the best advice i can give.
Edit: I stayed in contact with him through msn,but out of no where my pc broke and i didn't get one until 7 or so months after he left,but i'm kind of glad it did break because i could get on with things with out felling i was missing him.
