NEW YORK — An American woman who was held in Iran for more than 13 months and accused of spying returned Sunday to the United States.

Sarah Shourd arrived at around 6:30 a.m. at Dulles International Airport near Washington, accompanied by her mother and an uncle.

Shourd and her mother, Nora, were on their way to New York for a news conference later Sunday with the mothers of the other detained Americans.

Shourd was freed Tuesday after officials in Oman — an ally of both Iran and the United States — mediated a $500,000 bail.

It's not a well maintained border, so it would have been almost impossible to tell where Iraq ended and Iran began. You'd think people who stay away though.

Yup.

I guess they were just lacking common sense. Any American who goes hiking in that area might as well wave a flag saying "kidnap me".

The northern kurdish occupied part of Iraq has largely avoided a lot of the violence. Still not the greatest idea to go hiking near the border with Iran.

We probably shouldn't send spies to Iran then, or better ones.

You would think people would have the sense not to go backpacking near Iran. It's horrible, but I really have no sympathy for 'em.

Now if they were actually spies, then we should have sent the SEALs in long ago.

Generally speaking, any spy who fails in escaping detection or gets caught, is left to their own devices. Unless some form of exchange is organized.

Rescue operations are not exactly something any nation engages in, considering spying in and of itself violates the sovereignty of the country who is being infiltrated.

Well thats good. Considering how volatile a country like Iran is I'm surprised she was released this easily. In the past there have been far worse scenarios.

I am persian but i absolutely hate most aspects of the iranian culture and the stupidity of Islam but Iran is not a terrorist supporting nation! It has its own regime to deal with first let alone terrorizing another nation. Last year, i visited my family back in tehran and believe it or not, once you go to out of tehran, half of the people you see are hikers. Its a beautiful country but its run by people who know nothing but religion and poetry.

I thought Iran was holding her because US had some apparently innocent Iranians in their jails. Unless that was misinformation by Iran's president.
