Saudi Arabia has already declared the possiblity for them to acquire nukes should the world fail to keep the Middle East a nuclear weapon free zone. Turki al-Faisal, chief of the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, has hinted in a conference yesterday for the possibility for Saudi Arabia to aquire nukes and join the Middle Eastern nuclear arms:

"But, if our efforts and the efforts of the world community fail to bring about the dismantling of the Israeli arsenal of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and preventing Iran from acquiring the same, then why shouldn't we at least study seriously all available options, including acquiring WMDs, so that our future generations will not blame us for neglecting any courses of action that will keep looming dangers away from us,"

Turki al-Faisal

He also said regarding the neighboring Arab states:

"We can create a unified Arabian Peninsula, an elected Shoura Council, a unified armed force with a unified defense industry. We can also achieve an economic system with a unified currency, set up a unified space agency, a unified IT industry, a unified aerospace industry, an automotive industry, an educational system with a unified curriculum, a unified energy and petrochemical industry and a unified justice system,"

Turki al-Faisal

Although easier said than done, this can definitely hint for a Middle Eastern coalition in future years if not recent and the ideas of acquiring WMDs is not far fetched.

This seems like a rational move in national intrests, but what would this mean for the stability for the region? How would this affect Israel?

First time I ever endorse anything by my government. If Israel continues to have nukes, and the West and East continues to play their charades of supporting and opposing Iran's program. I say we should have our own. What worries me most is whether Nayef will use it on us before anyone else though...

Can't really say this comes as a surprise. Everyone knew that if Iran ever completed its nuclear weapon program every country in the area (ESPECIALLY Saudi Arabia) would also begin racing to build nukes as a protection measure. Hence one of the reasons why no one wanted Iran to build nukes, it's bound to start up a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

You're right, which is why Israel having both nukes and western protection is silly.

Nuclear weapons should be abolished for all the same way they did with chemical and bioligical weapons, no good can ever come from having such horrible weapons only pain and suffering on a scale unseen before in human history.

not too surprising, given the a higher level of general tension in the region , it wouldn't surprise me if Saudi Arabia wants nuclear weapons .

tbh, Id be far more worried if a country like Lebanon or Yemen had nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia is a relatively stable country that doesn't pose a threat to me.

Speak for yourself. The Gulf states (including Saudi Arabia) and Iran don't share your view. They consider Israeli nukes as a potential threat to their national security and no amount of persuasive arguments will convince them otherwise.

Why is it still a 'Nuclear Arms Race'? All scientifically developed nations know how Nuclear Fission works? And presumably they also have the expertise to weaponize it? Most major world powers have nuclear arms, so why is it still a race?

Saudi Arabia's joining the nuclear arms race would just give NATO an excuse to launch a "regime change" campaign against the country.

Then again, that's probably going to happen anyway ...

- Placement on the list of state supporters of terrorism

- US/EU-imposed economic sanctions

- NATO support for internal opposition groups,

- invasion

- installation of a puppet regime and, of course,

- elimination of OPEC.

All these things lie in store for Saudi Arabia and other Arab states currently allied with the West, and will probably commence just as soon the CIA/MI6 has successfully installed the next Shah of Iran.

Absurd?

Well, just think back to those photographs of Saddam Hussein shaking hands with Donald Rumsfeld. And Gaddafi hugging Tony Blair. And Gaddafi's son standing next to a smiling Hilary Clinton.

Where's Saddam now? Where are Gaddafi and his sons?

Yep, that's the way it works when Middle Eastern countries deal with NATO:

Revered Ally today, Hated Terrorist tomorrow!

Those fat monarchs are going to struggle to find drainage pipes big enough to crawl into oneday ...

Personally don't see a problem if Saudi gets nukes, if Israel has them and so does Iran, that leaves the Arabs - the people in the middle - without them.

I also don't think that the Saudi royals - like the Israeli government - are ever going to use the nukes offensively. It's simply insurance.

The crux for me however is if and when a revolution comes to Saudi and the royals are toppled. Because well... quite a few Saudi's don't think like the royals (in the conservative camp). Some of them will be inclined to use nukes offensively - i fear.

P.S.

I don't think Nayef will ever use nukes. Yes he historically uses the 'hammer' a lot, but he doesn't need to resort to nukes to do that.

a combination of a traditional friendship/alliance , along with a strong evangelical Christian camp in the US. as for the nukes, its a matter of who do you trust more with nukes.

Dude... this country has a lot of wealth... I don't think Al Saud will give up on it. They never have since the 17th century. Infact, should Al Saud ever fall, they need to disappear, Abbasy style.

Also, don't be an idiot, this place will not be democratic, so mob rule will not set foot on this land. A (Rashidi) Caliphate has historically and upto this day the only thing ever endorsed by the people.

To maintain power. first, it's protests, second, it's civil war, third, they nuke the "enemy". You think Al Saud are smart, they secretly support Israel, have plenty of global Wahabi presence, etc. But one factor you missed, they are snake smart: for power.

people over there think their government supports Israel? new to me, how did they come to that conclusion?

though thats rather a crude way to maintain power, what makes them think the rest of the world won't go berserk on them? (although you could argue they won't do much , as they won't ever impose sanctions over Saudi oil exports)

[QUOTE="Victorious_Fize"][QUOTE="Darkman2007"] why would the rulling family use it on their own people? (unless Al Saud are something different Im not aware of )Darkman2007

No, I said secretly for a reason... rarely do people know that, but they do hold a general view that they are bad. Only if you dig into their "bad" will you know what crap they did. They've used USA as a medium to ending Israeli boycott, opened air borders to them (for Iran), and are plotting with them on some occasions, mostly Iran. The world will do nothing... who would oppose them?
