If you haven't heard already, Virgin in the UK has put forth a bill that would let them limit their costomers' internet access to only the site which they [Vergin] have partnered with.

If you want to know more, check out my sig.

SAVE THE INTERNET. PASS IT ON.

Bandwidth is a finite commodity. I have no qualms about their proposal.

I didn't check the link, but if they are limiting to sites they are partnered with, its not a "bandwidth issue." Its a money issue. Bandwidth issues are solved by limiting file sharing, or limiting output bandwidth to high bandwidth users during peak times....not by signing contracts to limit where you can go.

He then spelt it Vegin in the first post. I'm with Virgin and I'm a happy customer, love my 20mb connection and it's consistent. I really doubt they will end up doing this, or atleast I really hope they don't and I wouldn't expect them to... but who knows, if it's going to earn them more money they aren't gunna give a crap what we think.

Im sure something's been taken out of context. Is Virgin mobile such a huge franchise that it can control an entire nation's internet access? I doubt it. What's really going on, im too lazy to do any research myself.

I hope this doesn't happen. if they seriously want to do this then why would people pay for it. seems to me it would just be like your TV channels basically. I would rather pay for TV and books/magazines then the internet if this happened. there are other ways to solve their problems. not every single thing should be about money either. the internet definitely has never been about making money as far as i know.

oh well, nothing i personally can do, either the masses will sit back and do nothing like they tend to do, or will put up a fight and stop this.

Well firstly this is old news, and secondly its not as bad as most people make it out to be, it not every website that will have to pay, its only websites that provide visual media such as youtube and all that, now im not entirely behind them on this, my friend is currently working on a website similar to youtube and myspace etc. and it would not do him much good if access to his site was limited.

1) Learn to spell. Or use the spellcheck button.

2) It doesn't bother me as I'm with Tiscali.

3) No doubt all ISP's want to do it but the customers won't let them.

Infact I remember reading not so long ago that you'd get a package eg. "The ITV, BBC, Youtube, Myspace package" and you'd get full speed on those sites, but everyone site your speed would be limited... that'd suck but I wasn't gunna go mad about it. But now I hear you just wont be able to access any other website at all, which seems quite a bit outrageous... which makes me think the rumours getting passed around got a little mixed up.

Are you kidding me? Tell that to Google. Tell that to Facebook. Tell that to eBay. Tell that to just about every Fortune 500 company that has a website out there whose sole purpose is to support sales for the company.

Making money on the internet is certainly what companies want to do. Fortunately, if this were the case and a significant number of websites were excluded from the service, people would simply choose to not pay for Virgin (or any other ISP for that matter) if their favorite websites were blocked due to this. The invisible hand driving capitalism will prevail.

fortunately, the ever prevalent cable monopoly will destroy the hand.

It's all about control, as usual. Control equals power. Power allows companies to get more money, at the expense of the consumer's freedom. And as usual, such restricting changes are only needed for the companies to make more money, so that they can make even more money, to make more money and then some more.

An internet service provider giving varying levels of service to different websites isn't a monopoly. That's like saying an airline company is a monopoly for providing 10 daily flights to New York, but only 1 to Chicago.

Neither will it "fly" in the UK. No one will want it so companies won't do it. If they do then their customers are pretty much gone. The internet is supposed to be open. If you limit it then your basically killing it.

If this happends I'm pretty sure some smart people will start new ISP companies that will have no such restrictions, then all the people will flock to them.

That's just it. You can't rely on wht may happen. You have to speak out and do something for yourselves.

ya amen to that. I dont see why they would change in the US; things seem pretty damn good here in terms of profit and stuff for ISPs.

I keep hearing about how other countries only get like 5GB a month or something, that just seems so wrong to me.

I just meant that it won't be the end of the internet if this actaully happends.
