Scenario: You Fall in Love With a Dying Woman. . .

I was watching Shadowlands, and I thought what the hell. . .

Let's say you fall in love (real love, not that emotional crush bullcrap) with a woman with cancer, or some terminal illness. It doesn't really affect your everyday life, but you both know she's going to die pretty soon (or soon enough, anyway.). Would you stay with her and marry her, knowing that you will be crushed when she dies, or would you leave her, even though you love her, because you know that the love would be passing and you would be miserable? Or would you do something else?

If it was real love that I felt, I couldn't imagine picking another option than staying with her for the rest of her life. . .

She's "leaving" either way so wouldn't you feel miserable if you left her or when she died?

And btw I would stay

I'd stay with her, I'd so regret not spending every last moment with her. Yet once she's gone, I would have probably "accepted the fact that" by then, I wouldn't be sad or crushed, I'd have just remembered that the time we had together, though it may have been short, would have been the best and most we could get out of it, and I wouldn't regret a single minute of it.

This thread reminds me of the books Odd Thomas (although saying that is pretty much a spoiler right there.) and Tuesdays With Morrie.

In my hypothetical, her illness isn't really a bother to everyday life. . .like an inoperable aneurysm.

My aunt is going through this right now. She's with a guy who has deadly cancer and is only expected to live another year or so.

They are getting married.

I think what I should do would be to stay with her but I'd think the pain would be too great. The closer I get to her the more I'd think about how far she would be once she's dead. If we fell in love, the pain of her leaving would be so unbearable. Therefore, I would just leave so I can never find the bliss that could've been and I don't have to feel like I have to miss it to enjoy it.

This is a interesting question you ask, I just watched 2001 a Space Odyseey that lead me to think about my own existance as a human being and how time just goes faster and such, now if this is true deep like real love were talking about here then I would stay with her to the end and then try to move on afterwards.

There are so many things that people miss out in there life times I dont want to miss out on true love thats for sure

I'd make sure she would have the best days of her life. I probably wouldn't think much for myself, seeing she would be the one nearing death.

I don't want to seem selfish, so I'll provide a better explanation.

If I love the woman, I can't imagine I'd just up and leave her because she is going to die. I wouldn't be able to live with myself, because A) I would be breaking my own heart and B) It could cause her pain in a time when she's already in a tough situation.
