According to 45% of a sample group of British teachers, schools are far too trigger happy with health & safety to benefit the children. Such examples include:

Wearing goggles to put up posters,
Five page briefing on the dangers of glue sticks,
Buoyancy aids for 16 year olds on a school trip
.

It's certainly light years away from when I was a kid. We were given basic health & safety things (ie. the roof didn't fall on us) but other than that we were taught we are in charge of our own safety. When I got into high school it was becoming more prominent, such as not being allowed perecetemol, plasters or bandages incase we were allergic to the ingredients (so the "nurses" room was just a glorified cupboard) and not allowed to use stickers incase we were allergic to the glue.

Thoughts?

They should have random rocket launcher attacks, just to keep the kids on their toes.

I think everything is too safe for kids now. They aren't allowed to figure things out for themselves anymore the hard way. The WORST is all these stupid parents that put out those "children playing" signs in the middle of the frickin' road so kids can play safely in the street. Are you kidding me? In my day we didn't play in the frickin' street and if we did, we did so at our own risk. I agree with you TC. :x

Time and money wasted, kids don't need to go to such extremes for such simple tasks. They should focus on making the actual quality of education better rather than running for the award of most safety conscious weirdo's.

I agree completely with these pictures, and I can't wait to tell my grand children the same thing as the first one

It seems that over protective parents are taking over society and this is a terrible, TERRIBLE thing. Parents must expose their children and let them learn what the outside world is like; not shelter them from all of the "terrible hurtful things" that may "hurt" them..... Honestly, these rules are the one of the most pathetic thing Ive seen in my life. Goggles to put up a freaking poster?! What the **** are they thinking? Do they seriously think the child's eyes will be hurt from putting up a ****ing poster!? "Better safe than sorry" is the worst reason to justify this type of action. Sure it is better to be safe than sorry, but shouldn't we use common sense when we create rules based around it? Has society become so stupid and scared of the world around them?

its more precaution for the school just to make sure there is no chance they can get sued for any stupid injury which wasnt caused on their half. at our school safety isnt as highly considered as that, most teachers would actually like their kids to get hurt for some of the things they do :P

It's nothing to do with overprotective parents, unfortunately. It's the same with those little stickers on hairdryers that say "do not use in shower". This is all to do with schools covering their arses from the money-grabbing bucket solicitors, promising "no-win-no-fee" for "trips or falls anywhere in the last 3 years".

When I went to school, we were allowed to go into the woods beside the school for recess to play. The elementary school kids built a fort out of old branches that looked like an igloo, while the junior high kids just built a giant wall with a gate made out of sticks and connected it to trees and a chain link fence that was already there so they were protected on either side by thick brush, a deep creek, a chain link fence, and their wooden fence. Once we got these built, we would have water balloon fights using our respective forts for protection. Yea, my school wasn't too concerned with safety, but everyone had fun.

Which result from greedy and overprotective parents wanting to "protect" their child from all of society's "terrible and harmful influences"
The only reason why those lawyers exist is due to their demand for them. People recently sue everyone for any type of reason. Remember the McDonalds coffee thing? Nothing but greed. I think it shows that the justice system needs to be fixed or changed in some way so that you cannot sue anyone for almost no reason at all.

Our school isn't anything like that. They just sent a bunch of warnings during the whole Swine Flu scare, and that's about as bad as it ever gets.

By the end of secondary school, the forms to let us go swimming to the Dome were 16 pages long + the teachers had to do a danger assessment. No wonder teachers aren't prepared to take kids on school trips anymore. It's so sad. My grandpa used to be a teacher and they took the kids on a school trip once. A girl made a tyre swing and grandpa and another teacher just told her to be careful. She fell off and broke her arm and her mum came up to the school to ask what had happened. They said they told her to be careful and the mum said that was her own fault then and went home. Nowadays you'd get the parent suing the school. Health and safety is the product of the suing culture. If people stopped being so damn selfish and greedy then maybe kids nowadays would have the oppurtunity of school trips.
