My town should be experiencing some cold weather in the next few days. How cold does it have to be in your town for work or school to be canceled.
For my school it has to be -55 degrees celcius, -67 ferainheit (sp?). I live in northern canada so you can see why the temperature has to be so cold

Umm.... it never gets cold enough for that sort of thing. I imagine even starting a car in -67 degree weather would be a bit of a stretch? Is there a temperature where a car won't start? What is it?

What part of Northern Canada? I'm in Peace River, AB and we're dealing with a lot of snow.

For me, snow days never happen. Snow = much busier day at work and a phone that rings off the hook with listener updates.

But if you don't have to go out today, I wouldn't. It's a mess. And people are still driving like it's July! Just a hint, passing when one lane is barely clear is NOT a good idea.

If there's enough snow for the entire big city to come to a halt, then school is closed for me. When I lived in the country, there had to be enough snow so you couldn't walk in school for it to be closed.... The temperature is just a detail.

there sure is. most cars out here use block heaters, or else the engine won't turn over (and you could possibly crack it).

people start plugging in when it hits around -20 Celsius, just because you never know how cold it'll get overnight. I think -25 or so is when you really need to worry.

it got down to -50 here with the wind chill last month.

Wow! The coldest it ever got here (in my life) was around -8 - -10 degrees fahrenheit which is right at -23 celsius or so. I wonder what my parents did. I was in middle school... maybe they did close school because of the weather? I seem to remember playing outside a lot that week.

It's not a matter of coldness but of precepitation.

it's true, for the most part. extreme cold will cancel a lot of things, like school, but people still make it to work.

it doens't snow at that temp, though, it just blows ice crystals around.

but it got up to the single digit negatives last night, and that's why we got 15 cms of snow in 24 hours.

I live in Labrador, I'm preety sure it only that cold here because of the high elevation (>2000 ft above sea level) and how far north we are (53 degrees latitude)

I usually work during the summer, so I've never not had to go in. As for school, my university is in upstate New York... so basically I will never see classes cancelled due to weather conditions. The last time they cancelled classes here... there was 6 feet of snow on the ground.

School has never been called off for cold weather. There always has to be an INTENSE storm or a LOT of snow (a few feet in a short period of time) in order for the district to call school off. I live in North Dakota.

For local schools, if a snowflake lands on anyone in the county, all aschools are cancelled. For my work, if you are able to open your door to leave home, it's not cancelled.

Well here in Ottawa there is a chance things will be closed because the temperature is dive bombing from about 0 Celsius to -24 with a windchill of -34 overnight, which could cause a flash freeze making roads really bad. If it was slower to descend then things wouldn't be cancelled though.
