http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-13803106 An 11-year-old boy who was turned away on his first day at secondary school in london for wearing his hair in cornrows, has won his case at the high court after a judge ruled the school's policy resulted in "indirect racial discrimination" The school only allowed a conservative "short back and sides" hairstyle for boys amid concerns that other styles could encourage "gang culture"

Might as well ban Justin Beiber's hairstyle as to not promote his music.

No. It's not racist. And it's not discrimination either if they don't allow anyone to wear that styIe. Schools are allowed to set dress code.

Plus if you look at the article these cornrows aren't the "trashy thug" type, they actually look pretty nice. There's no way this hairstyle would encourage gang culture.

Not wanting him to look like a fool is racist? Didn't know only blacks could put their hair in that style.

My school doesn't allow anything other than formal hairstyles.

You can't use hairgel and they don't even allow something like this.

No. It's not racist. And it's not discrimination either if they don't allow anyone to wear that styIe. Schools are allowed to set dress code.

They're allowed to set rules for styles of clothes and hair, I get that but, to make the correlation between a hairstyle and supposed 'gang culture' is just asinine. Say you just don't want the hairstyle because of dress code reasons; say that it's part of some uniform rule or anything else but stating that it could 'encourage gang culture'? Now you're stretching.

Cultural differences. Braids are acceptable in pretty much most of the world. Africans, Native Americans, Asia, etc. I've been expposed to braids my whole life and from personal experience just like any hairstyle it depends on the person wearing them. When you claim that they are stupid when it's been a common hairstyle for a big portion of the world for thousands of years just makes you seem stupid.

It depends on what the school's exact rule was.

If it is against all braids in general for male students, then that could be considered part of the school's dress code.

If it was specifically against cornrows, then yes, it is discrimination.

this kid better learn to follow dress code and hair code if he wants to land a decent job in the future. no law school, med school, pharm school, etc is gonna accept him if he comes to the interview in cornrows. Unless he wants to be a hairdresser or something for the rest of his life. Uniform policy is good. It prepares students for the real world of employment.

[QUOTE="brendanhunt1"][QUOTE="C_Rule"][QUOTE="brendanhunt1"] The school only allowed a conservative "short back and sides" hairstyle for boys amid concerns that other styles could encourage "gang culture"

What the hell, who would even want to go to a school like that. How is a certain hairstyle going to incite gang culture???

It's a catholic school

And there is dress codes in the workforce as well. Wear what you want on your own time but dress for success otherwise.
