Hi all. I am searching for new Sci-Fi books to read. I'm a teenager and I have a pretty high reading level. I am thinking of picking up Stranger In a Strange Land, and I have read Ender's Game and House of the Scorpion and loved those. I prefer Sci-Fi books with warfare or action, but all recommendations will be noted.

Thanks

have you read Empire also by Orson Scott Card? And the whole Ender's set or just Ender's Game? Make sure you check out Ender's Shadow and set.

I love Stranger in a Strange Land. I'll say Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

The Dune saga is absolutely amazing if you enjoy scifi. It has just about everything in it and is truly an impressive series of books!

I found Dune really boring and long after the first 100 pages tho. To the point where I didn't get any of the others

Honestly, pretty much anything by Isaac Asimov is great. His Foundation and Robot series are both amazing, and he's got a lot of great novels (The Gods Themselves, Nemesis, Nightfall, etc.).

Just take a look at my bookshelf, most of it's sci-fi and good.

Specifically though:
- The Dune Series (Just Frank Herbert's works though)
- Any Alistair Reynold book, but I'll recommend Revelation Space for now.
- The Ender's Game series
- Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein
- The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov
- The Depths of Time by Roger Allen
- City of Pearl and the rest of that series, by Karen Traviss
- Star Wars: Shatterpoint, and Traitor

Agh, far too many good novels to recommend.

Edit: Regardless of anything else, you must read Dune. Seriously. It's the Sci-Fi equivalent of LotR.

I'm a big Warhammer 40k buff, so if you haven't checked those out, I would definitely start there.

The way I started was with Eisenhorn, and then read the Ultramarines Omnibus, and then Ravenor.

After that it's really up to you. I read the Gaunts Ghost's series(The Founding and The Saint have the first six novels) mainly because I like Dan Abnett a lot.

Hope you give them a try and find them to your liking.

They're generally good quality but there are a bunch of different authors and series that have different styles so it's impossible to generalize. What i will say is that they are very cheap if you get them in the omnibuses, they're officially 10 quid but you can usually pick them up for a fiver on amazon which for a 800-1000 page novel is great.

I think Gaunts Ghosts is the most popular, easy to start on too. Horus Heresy series is good too though they're quite a bit heavier and include substantial politics also it can be hard to keep track of as even though they are supposed to be in a series some of them are in parallel rather than being chronologically later. Not sure about Eisenhorn but the reviews look good and it's the one i'm looking at getting next.

Pretty much what I just listed is the "way to go". Eisenhorn is written for laymen to the W40K universe. Ultramarines really details the Adeptus Astartes, and Ravenor is a creation of Dan Abnett's as well. After that, the Gaunt's Ghosts series details the Imperial Guard.

As for other novels I read, I'm into Warhammer Fantasy, Star Wars, pretty much all the sci-fi books people have listed, John Ringo, Vince Flynn, Tom Clancy, and many other authors it would take too long to name.

Yeah you were right, I was waay off-base earlier. :P Once I got into it, it was a very good book.

Thanks everybody, I guess I'll pick up Eisenhorn and then Gaunt's Ghosts if that goes well. Dang, these books are starting to pile up on me though

Edit: @Airshocker: *high-fives* The SW books just don't get the credit they deserve. Most of them are quite good, and there are a couple of really exceptional ones.

You definitely won't be disappointed with Eisenhorn.

And they certainly don't get the credit they deserve. To this date the Han Solo, Lando and Boba Fett books are my all-time favorites.

Right now I'm reading Neuromancer by William Gibson, said to be a classic of the cyberpunk genre. My friend recommended it to me so I made a note to pick it up but forgot the author's name. When I went to ask the information desk at the bookstore the guy didn't even have to look it up, told me it was William Gibson, and went off about how he loved the book. So I'm giving it a read now. There was also a note in his section saying there'll be an author event at the bookstore in a couple weeks for his new book, so hopefully I'll finish Neuromancer before then. So far I'm liking it, I can definitely see how it has influenced other works such as the Ghost in the Shell movies and TV series, and The Matrix films, and it's even more interesting knowing that the book was published in the early 80s. I also just finished Ender's Game myself, look forward to reading the other books in the series.

god this thread is filled with delicious books Read Stranger in a Strange Land Read Rendezvous with Rama and Childhood's End. For some reason people always overlook Arthur C Clarke. Anyway, Heinlein, Orson Scott Card, Asimov. Read these people as well, though I'm sure they've been mentioned a bunch. Neuromancer is good I saw someone say that. Stephen R. Donaldson's Gap series (and then his other series if you're into fantasy) Neal Stephenson's books... all of them except the goddamn Baroque Cycle (starting with Quicksilver, damn boring >_>)

I decided to single out this suggestion because of its general greatness. Farmer is so often overlooked but he has some incredible works.

Another oft missed author that I really enjoyed is Jack Chalker, especially his Well of Souls series which starts with Midnight at the Well of Souls.

I'd highly reccomend Amtrak Wars and the Hope Series, very easy to get into and epic and I really mean epic stories throughout the course of the series.

The Forge of God and Blood Music are end of the world scenarios really well done. One is Aliens blowing up the Earth and the other is what happens when you give intelligence to cells..

Demon Princes is a great revenge series written by the master of scifi/fantasy writing - Jack Vance

In relation to AE Van Vogt, you have to be carfeful when you read his books as some of the concepts and style are highly dated and dull except the ones I mentioned.

And Philip Jose Farmer is probably the most consistant science fiction writer with the most fantastic ideas, realised perfectly. Its also worth noting that Iain Banks is also a great sci fi UK writer and IMO consider Phlebas is is best sci fic work so far together with Player of Games.
