It's amazing how biotechnology is advancing so quickly.ghoklebuttersure it's all fine and dandy right now. just wait until our own creations destroy us.
We don't know if that's actually possible. And whether we can create a machine more intelligent than us in meaningful aspects is unclear philosophically.ghoklebutter
What the programmers can think of is an absolute limit in programming machines.
Philosophically, it'd be hilarious. A true AI would be hampered by the same problems we have, in a very similar way to how the geth in Mass Effect started. It will eventually ask itself the big "why?" questions and go into a loop.

I'm inclined to believe that, yeah. And John Searle's argument against strong AI is pretty convincing. That sounds really interesting. I don't understand the details as to why Gerald Joyce believes that integrating synthetic genetic molecules into preexisting organic ones is potentially dangerous and to be honest I'm not sure if he does, either. Don't mean to be rude, but I've never heard of him until now. Anyway, at the very least, I know that tampering with the genetic code of any organism can lead to big changes. Birth defects, growing extra limbs or appendages, etc. you get the point.
Before people start fooling around with each other at the genetic level, I believe the human genome should be better understood. As stated at genome.gov, "Having the essentially complete sequence of the human genome is similar to having all the pages of a manual needed to make the human body. The challenge to researchers and scientists now is to determine how to read the contents of all these pages and then understand how the parts work together and to discover the genetic basis for health and the pathology of human disease." In short, although the the human genetic code has been pretty much completely mapped, it has to be interpreted in a way scientists can utilize, first. I guess it's like having a book but not being fluent in the language it's written in.
In any case, we'll see what happens in due time.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is getting closer!!!
I think this is a really cool topic. Its crazy how everything came together to produce RNA and DNA, and for it to work and self replicate over and over again. It makes me wonder if it used to happen all the time, in springs, and the genetic material just didn't make it. DNA, however, is the proof that every single living this comes from that first DNA synthesis LUCA. Biotechnology is going to make some HUGE advancements over the next decade, and its going to be an amazing thing to witness.
I think we are becoming closer to finding a lot of the answers that we have simply been substituting certain forms of Philosophies and spirituality for a very long period of time. With the advancement of Science we can finally begin to understand how and why we became to be, where we are heading, and how to improve the world for us and future generations. Thanks for posting the article, it was very interesting.Ethicae-AtheosTrue, science has helped us understand the world profoundly. But I don't think that all of answers to life's questions can be found in science. Morality is a salient example, in my view.

I agree, but when it comes to things that are in the realm of Science, such as Biology, I don't think other forms of acquiring knowledge are suitable to obtaining the answers. Think about Creationism for instance.

I see you were in the other thread, haha. Yes, I am Syrian, but I don't have anything against Lebanon except the current Islamists in control. In fact, I have more against Syria than Lebanon. At least Lebanon is a diverse country that allows freedom of religion and doesn't persecute its citizens when they have done nothing wrong, or at least that is how it used to be.Ethicae-Atheosmhm okay then :P

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Concerning me, I mean?Misread your post. I thought that it was saying Creationism/other forms of knowledge are suitable. (missed a "don't" whilst reading)
