can anyone tell me the difference between a cult and a religion?mixedplanetI think a cult goes against the mainstream and usually has a single leader who usually takes advantage of the followers.
Scientology is a dangerous, violent cult.

Secular definition of a cult:
"A cult is a group or movement exhibiting a great or excessive devotion or dedication to some person, idea or thing and employing unethically manipulative techniques of persuasion and control (e.g. isolation from former friends and family, debilitation, use of special methods to heighten suggestibility and subservience, powerful group pressures, information management, suspension of individuality or critical judgment, promotion of total dependency on the group and fear of [consequences of] leaving it, etc) designed to advance the goals of the group's leaders to the actual or possible detriment of members, their families, or the community."
People seriously need to look past the dictionary to see what a cult is. To compare a cult like Scientology to all of religion is maddeningly ignorant.
Signs of a cult:
People are put in physically or emotionally distressing situations;
Their problems are reduced to one simple explanation, which is repeatedly emphasized;
They receive unconditional love, acceptance, and attention from a charismatic leader;
They get a new identity based on the group;
They are subject to entrapment (isolation from friends, relatives, and the mainstream culture) and their access to information is severely controlled;
Absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability;
No tolerance for questions or critical inquiry;
No meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget, expenses such as an independently audited financial statement;
Unreasonable fear about the outside world, such as impending catastrophe, evil conspiracies and persecutions;
There is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil;
Former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances;
There are records, books, news articles, or television programs that document the abuses of the group/leader.

Just the size.

By what account? A dictionary? By the dictionary, political groups and alternative medicine is considered a cult as well.:roll:
There is so much difference between a cult and normal religion that it isn't funny to compare the two, or call one a bigger cult than the other.

I can't really defend myself here because I didn't propose an argument in the first place, I just said "Win'' -_-
Could somebody who follows anon or is in anon please update me on the fight they had?
Becuase if i remember correctly just a few months ago dudes wearing V for Vendetta mask were announcing Scientologys downfall, but did anon even have any success other than messing with there website for a little bit?

Exactly correct. Is a religion based on aliens any more absurd than believing some guy built a watercraft capable of carrying two of every species of creature on the planet? Is a far-fetched book written 2000 years ago more valid than a far-fetched book written 60 years ago? Is the God that the Cistine Chapel is dedicated to any more solid than the one the Sphinx is dedicated to? In short, No. Every religion has no basis in fact they simply ask you to take thier word for it. In truth, Tom Cruise is no crazier than your local pastor.
I have no problem with people who want to believe that BS, but the tactics of scientology are wholly unethical

Depends on if you believe in religion or not.

No...You just got proved wrong so you tried to act like you didn't mean anything by saying "win" :|
there's that tolerance atheists always pride themselves on:roll: but I'll humor you and take your claims seriously

Jesus, yes. Noah, maybe not.
Is a far-fetched book written 2000 years ago more valid than a far-fetched book written 60 years ago? DarkElf2112
yes because there is a wide breadth of historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Is the God that the Cistine Chapel is dedicated to any more solid than the one the Sphinx is dedicated to? DarkElf2112
yes because we have a very good idea of just how christianity started. you can actually go to the places Jesus walked. we have no idea how the religion regardign the sphinx started.
In short, No. Every religion has no basis in fact they simply ask you to take thier word for it. DarkElf2112
:lol::lol::lol: no buddy, you may say that the evidence for the truth behind christianity is lacking, but you cannot say that there is no evidence or facts to back it up because there is in reality a wide breadth of evidence and facts to back up the veracity of chrsitianity.
In truth, Tom Cruise is no crazier than your local pastor.DarkElf2112my pastor actually appreciates the triumphs of modern medicine and psychology. the same cannot be said about Tom Cruise.

In addition, they believe the earth and universe are TRILLIONS of years old (as opposed to the accepted age of the universe, 13 billion-16 billion years), that all humans have a Thetan, which is a god-like spirit that is eight trillion years old, and is implanted at death into another person, and eventually join what is known as the Intergalactic Thetan Collective.
Seriously, I will believe Noah's Ark to be true before I believe this crock of ****. Instead of Young Earth Creationism, people need to be focusing on Scientology.

the reason people are not debating scientologists is because most people have the impression that scientologists are bat**** crazy. While young earthers aren't necessarily bat**** crazy, they may be rational, just ignorant of the facts. Ignorance can be fixed, but stupid is forever. bat**** craziness is usually forever.Please Log In to post.
