After seeing this, I don't feel the same amount of resentment for it anymore. Seeing as how scientology makes a great tool for making people laugh.

Scientology may be the new kid on the block, but it is built from the same kind of corruption and manipulation as any other.

The one (and afaik only) thing I like about scientology, is that it has that name. I could see the label "Scientology" being applied by the fundies to scientists and science advocates out there as sort of a religion.

"SEE! Their religion is scientology and they worship SCIENCE and DARWIN!!" - crazed/every-other fundie.

Then again, the title "scientology" is a bit deceiving in that someone who may not be that informed about it might give it a moments thought (which is too long) because of the root word "science" sitting right there.

It's a win/lose of sorts.

You haven't looked at many religions, have you? Christianity teaches worship of a Jewish zombie. Catholics participate in cannibalism as they believe they are eating the flesh of Jesus and drinking of his blood. There are other religions that have other far-fetched beliefs and teachings.

In Roman Catholic theology, "transubstantiation" (in Latin, transsubstantiatio, in Greek μετουσίωσις (metousiosis)) means the change of the substance of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist, while all that is accessible to the senses remains as before. Its from wiki, so obviously there is a good chance its wrong, but there it is. They think its the body and the blood, but to the senses its still just a light wafer.

Just curious: how come mods don't lock these types of threads, even though it's meant to be a clear mockery of a religion that many people follow?

Perhaps modern Catholicism is different from the original teachings, then. According to many of the early Christian theologians, they believed that they were eating the flesh of Jesus.

It is widely known that Catholics believe the bread and wine is actually transformed into the body and blood of Christ. Many protestant religions believe it to be symbolic, but Catholics believe it literally.

I thought the defining trait of cannibalism was actually eating human flesh.

I also wasn't aware that Catholics believed Jesus was human.

  1. If one would assume that the Catholics are correct in their beliefs, then they would be eating flesh. If they are wrong, they still believe they are eating flesh. Either way, in their minds, they would be eating flesh, thus committing cannibalism.
  2. Jesus Christ was both completely human and completely divine (according to Christianity). He was completely divine because he was able to live without sin and to remove all of the original sin from mankind. However, he was also completely human. In order to be able to take all of mankind's original sin upon himself, it was necessary for him to be human. In order for his sacrifice to have true significance, he had to have been completely human and completely mortal. If he was fully divine without any humanity, he would not have had to die, and if he had died, it would not have carried the same weight without his humanity placing him in connection with the human condition. Therefore, the flesh of Jesus is human. It is also divine.
  3. Catholics (in the traditional sense) believe they eat the flesh of Jesus. Jesus was fully human in addition to being fully divine. Therefore, Catholics believe that they are eating human flesh. In their minds, fact and faith are inseparable, so they are practicing cannibalism.

Yeah that was weird to say... It's just the symbolic ingestion of Christ's flesh and blood. It's actually crackers and juice. Yummy!
