"Game of Thrones" Season 2 premieres this Sunday (April 1st). Given the amount of time that went into production and the obviously larger budget HBO provided for the 2nd season, fans, both readers and watchers, hope that this season will be better than the 1st.

My question is: How is HBO going to handle Season 3? The novel, "A Storm of Swords" is over 900 pages long and a lot (and I mean A LOT) of events take place within the 3rd book. Will Season 3 be extended beyond 10 episodes? Or, will Season 3 be divided into 2 parts?

Why am I asking this before the first episode of Season 2? It's because after the first episode of Season 1 that HBO renewed "Game of Thrones" for a 2nd season! That is why I am asking this now!

I'm not thinking about "Harry Potter" (yeah!) or "Twilight" (ew!) because this is a television show and so far, the show has been around 95% faithful to the books. However, the media might believe that it could be more worth while to divide up adaptations of books because it has worked better so far. And yet, other shows, like "The Walking Dead" continue to increase the amount of episodes every season in order to include mostly everything that happened in the books.

What do you think?

Last I heard they intended to merge some of the books together because you had major characters that were left out of entire books (ie Jamie Lannister) so some events might be moved around to compensate.

(EDIT and the walking dead series and graphic novel really don't closely resemble each other anymore)

I doubt they are going to do a literal translation of paper to cable since the producers themselves have said they are making changed to have it make more sense on the TV screen. I have a feeling this show's budget is going to get to large and it will see the same fate that Deadwood and Rome saw where HBO will just pulled the plug because the costs were getting out of hand.

My opinion is that they'll make season 3 two parts the way they did with The Walking Dead season 2. I didn't even realize that it was the same season being that it was the biggest difference I've ever seen within a single season. Crap -> Redemption.

Anyway, back on topic. Season 3 will be 2 halves of about 10 episodes apiece for a total of 20 if it's still around, which by all accounts it will be seeing as the emmy nominations and golden globe awards.

Season 4 will be the first half of book 4 and the first half of book 5. Instead of running parallel like books 4 and 5 did with each other, they'll just take the first half of each book and make that 10 to 20 episodes. Then season 5 will be the second half of books 4 and 5.

That's my opinion anyway. I can't wait for Sunday and for book 6, whenever that'll be.

the producers have sounded like they are pretty set on limiting seasons to 10 episodes and theres no way a storm of swords is getting fit into 10 hours. theyll probably just split them up. the novel itself has been split in half in some regions for the sake of length, so i think thats the most viable option. however, ive heard the producers are also considering moving some material from swords over to the seasons with the crows/dragons material.

Season 3 seems complicated, but season 4 is where some real compromises will have to be made. Will it cover just A Feast for Crows? Because, if that's the case, it would have to be a complete Tyrion-less season, which the suits at HBO will not be happy to hear. Or maybe it will cover half of both A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons, which would be extremely complicated.

I'm expecting this as well...Game of Thrones may be better off because it has a larger fanbase. I was partiuclarly disappointed when Rome got cancelled.

I didn't, that's why I prefaced with 'my opinion.'

I just thought about it logically for the most efficient way and yet still get all of the main points and details and not leave entire chunks out.

When you think about it, it does make sense because from what I've heard (I've only read the first 2 books, I'll be reading the 3rd one this summer) one of the popular main characters is NOT in the 4th book! So, they might have to do that in order to keep the interest of the audience.

The season premiere of Season 2 will NOT disappoint. As for "Winds of Winter," who knows when that will be complete!

Yeah, I know from reading to who you are referring. However, they are adding a brand new character that isn't at all in the books, not even one sentence. He's a Lannister I believe this coming season 2. He's supposed to be one of the Lannister cousins of Tyrion, Jaime, and Cersei I believe. His name is Alton or Altair or something like that and I think he'll be in a few episodes. But again from reading the books and also online, they just invented him just for the show.

I'm so looking forward to Sunday I absolutely feel I just can't wait. I feel pretty much the same for book 6, however, because it's going to be so far out and nobody's sure even what year, people just make peace with that. Keep reading, book 3 may be the best of the first 5, but that's also my opinion. It's definitely got the most action and intrigue and sabotage. It's full on, war.

Book 3 will be split in two, covering seasons 3 and 4 of the show. Afterwards, the show will likely end and never have to deal with the book 4/5 timeframe problems.

I may be wrong but watching the clips from the first 2 episodes that HBO released, that Alton Lannister guy just seems to be Cleon Frey from the books with a different name. They may have expanded his role more.

Why would the show 'likely' end? Book 3 is one of the most exciting books and translated to screen would incur the highest ratings to date. Season 2 should build ratings on season 1, and season 3 and 4 would build on the previous fanship.

Judging strictly from the fanship of the show of people that never read the books, I'd say they're more inclined to keep watching for more exciting seasons like those based upon Clash of Kings and Storm of Swords. There's enough to keep them interested and more people will want to check out what the hype is about and that will increase viewership while not losing pretty much anyone; I don't foresee that anyway. Especially since the ratings were huge for an HBO show, being a paid channel. Also, the fact that it won 2 emmy's and even nominated was a first for a fantastical/sci-fi type show. Usually that's reserved for dramas and comedies. Hopefully people are becoming more accepting and open minded for something other than cop and doctor dramas.

People stuck with shows like Lost and 24 for several seasons as the die hard fans just kept watching and I see Game of Thrones as better and more complete than either of those. Both of those went to full resolution, so I don't see anything less from Thrones. If it were to end, it would most likely end after parts of book 4 or 5, however they do it, than after the full action and depth of book 3. It just doesn't make any logical sense unless the budget gets too high and it's too expensive to produce. I'm not sure how HBO budgets work since there aren't commercials throughout. Maybe they get a cut of HBO subscriptions. Not sure how that works and how HBO shows can have big budgets unless funded by corporations or a rich benefactor.

On Tuesday, April 10th, HBO renewed "Game of Thrones" for a 3rd season. Will "A Storm of Swords" be one long season or two seasons?
