A young man's attempt to take a selfie snapshot with the statue of a 16th century Portuguese king ended badly when the 126-year-old statue crashed to the ground and shattered, police said on Wednesday.

The man, whom police did not identify, accidentally toppled Dom Sebastiao's statue after climbing up to its pedestal outside the ornate Rossio railway station in central Lisbon just before midnight on Tuesday.

He tried to flee the scene but police caught him. He will appear before a judge at a later date.

The child-sized statue of the sad-eyed, sword-wielding king stood in a niche between two horseshoe-shaped arches at the entrance to the station. Completed in 1890, the station is a protected monument.

Source.

Yet more evidence that selfie culture is destructive.

It could of been caused by selfish selfie culture, or maybe the fact he actually climbed to it's pedestal.

I don't think I've ever taken a selfie before, and I have my own prejudice towards today's seemingly self centered generation*. That said, I think the act of climbing on the statue is more to blame than selfie culture. It's not like these types of things have never happened in the past.

*I might also just be an old curmudgeon, and I accept and embrace that

While I find the concept of taking a photo of yourself for any reason other than to use for your passport, very odd. I agree with the above that climbing on the stature is what broke it, not the act of taking photo's of yourself.

Sheer stupidity.

Who in their right mind see that and goes " Why aren't others climbing up on the small ledge with the statue on it?"

So it's not only ISIS that wantonly destroys antiquities. Soon the selfie generation will be photographing themselves with severed heads. :-O

I couldn't find a photograph of the destroyed statue, but this is what it originally looked like.

To be fair, people have been damaging public property and even accidentally killing themselves for photos since before "selfies" were a thing.

I've always wondered about this. I was born in 1987, am I a part of the me generation? I'm always interested with the cutout for generations is. I hate selfies with a passion. It;s narcissism at it's base. The hallmark of narcissism has always been the person obsessing over themselves in the mirror. Now they obsess over pictures of themselves, sometimes in mirrors. It's insane.

That has nothing to do with selfie culture.

You could have the exact same thing happening with a couple of young guys on holiday and a bit drunk or some guys who wanted to show off to a girl or just random guys together.

Morons will be morons no matter the reason.

But with that said, Why was the statue not better secured? if it was that old and a relic, they have to now that in such a public place, there will be morons around.

It's difficult to tell whether it was sculpted or whether it was just cast from gypsum. But if it was sculpted, then somebody must have invested a lot of time and effort in it. Granted, the face looks like a puppet's, but the hands, the folds in the clothing etc. are pretty good, IMHO.

The face is congruent with historic depictions of the monarch, though:

Idk, I don't think there is anything odd about wanting to have pictures of yourself to share with others that look good.

Getting off the topic, I know. Just, I never took selfies, and I never had many friends, either. Never realized how difficult it is to try to take a good picture of yourself until I tried to take one for a dating website.
