Link (news.com.au). It is being proposed that parents should be legally allowed to determine the sex of their child through IVF. Do you believe this is right or wrong?

Personally I am against it. A child is being turned more into a product than an actual human being.

My extreme bias says that they should adopt (:P) but I just can't see myself taking away their right.

I'd say it shouldn't be allowed. You're suppose to love your kids regardless of what they may be, so just be happy that you can have a child; I know too many people that wish they could give birth to their own child, but a disorder with them prevents them from having one, forcing them to adopt instead. Also, if you want a boy/girl, just go adopt one instead of waiting 9 months to become mad about what you were given.

I think its practical, and could lead to a better and brighter future for mankind. Imagine this being the start of a world where everyone was capable of being smart, beautiful/handsome, outgoing, etc. and where they could balance the population ratio if needed.

Morally it may not be right for some, but I see no problem in it.

I don't see it as a morality issue. I just think the parents of their chosen child are lazy, boring, and have no sense of excitement. If you can't even take a surprise of having a boy or a girl, maybe you shouldn't have kids at all.......

What about those couples with 4-5 kids, where the mother would love nothing more in the world than to have a little girl but all she has been able to concieve are boys, is she not entitled to her little girl atleast?

If you're doing stuff in the fertility clinic to try to have a certain gender child, I'm OK with that. I'm not OK with aborting a kid just because they're the wrong gender, but I'm against abortion anyway.

Although I don't consider myself religious at all, I feel that choosing the gender of your baby and possibly going against what was meant to be is a terrible thing.

What's with all this "be happy with what you get" crap? Why can't you be be happy with what you get, and happIER with getting more? If someone gives you a cake, and they also offer to give you some cookies, do you take the cookies as well? YES! Why the **** not?

Perhaps that is how that particular child is "meant to be". I have a friend, a close friend, who was born in a test tube by IVF. It wouldn't be a shock to me had she been born later that her parents may have considered selecting for favorable traits and low risk for life-threatening conditions. But that is how that child came to be and going further and saying "what if..." holds no bearing.

For years and years and years people have been doing things that "supposedly" will swing their chances of getting what they want, everything from what to eat to standing on your head after trying to conceive. I personally really REALLY want a boy first, but I'm not sure if I would do invitro to get it. I don't think it's wrong. I don't like the idea of 'custom babies' where you choose the features of the child like in a game or something, but giving nature a little nudge in the direction you'd like isn't hurting anybody. @Mak4lyfe, do you realize the same science that can decide the gender of a child could also at some point be able to remove genetic disorders from being passed down? By saying NO NO NO to all of it, you're also disagreeing with the things that could help those unfortunate people conceive a healthy baby.

daqua_99

personally, I'm against IVF anyway because of too much possibilities for wrongness and commoditization. This was bound to happen. IVF inevitably leads to dangerous things, ie. the view that people have a "right" to have children and the commoditization of people (kind of like slavery), plus IVF is bad for orphans (ie. if people have children by IVF then there will be less people willing to adopt).

I can see this being a good idea in some cases. Dosen't China (or was it japan) still have that single child rule, and most parents will throw away female babies

otherwise, i'm not sure i understand what they mean by sex selection, do they screw around with the fetus and give it the hormones to tip the odds towards the desired gender or something?

Female egg is always going to be X. Male sperm is X or Y. Some eggs will be XY = Male, and some will be XX = Female. In IVF they fertilise several eggs, so they'll literally look for male or female embryos. Legally in the UK they can then insert a maximum of 2 embryos into the mother in the hope that at least one will survive. This is why successful IVF often results in (non-identical) twins.

Can't say I care about what others do. I wouldn`t engineer my baby, though. Do it the old fashioned way.
