Saw it today. Saw Avatar last week. Two polar opposite films. Loved them both. Go see SH if you have not. I highly reccomend it. "It'selementary, my dear Watson."

thought it was awesome.Downey Jr is just brilliant in the role his quips and his acting made the film imo.
Looks ****
My friends went to see it yesterday and I rudely declined because it looks so bad.
I'd fall asleep in the cinema...
I thought it was pretty good, I haven't read any of the books so the most i could expect was a guy with a sterotypical detective costume mumbling something about murder. I did think it was all a bit over the top all though I don't want to spoil anything, but the ending explanation is just ridiculous. Not to mention that Holmes has his own personal fallout 3 V.A.T.S as indicated in the fight scene.

i taught they said they never said that quote or something Sherlock never said that. Quote is the classic Sherlock Holmes quote from the books. Was never in the movie, though.I really liked the musical score and the leading actors. The plot was pretty lame, though. Hopefully the inevitable follow-up is better in that department! However, it was a decent movie.

No, that's not correct. It's actually the other way around.
"Elementary, my dear Watson" never appears in any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books. The closest thing to it is from the short story "The Adventure of the Crooked Man" from "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes", but it is really not close there either, as you see here:
(Holmes) "I have the advantage of knowing your habits, my dear Watson," said he.
(Watson) "Excellent!" I cried.
(Holmes) "Elementary," said he.
The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes
The cliched phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson" actually comes from the 1929 movie, "The Return of Sherlock Holmes".
I don't know much about Sherlock Holmes, but there is some posh house not far from where I live that does this Sherlock Holmes roleplay tourist attraction thing. You got to dress up as yourself but in that 'Sherlock Homes' style time frame, whatever it is, 1890's or whatever I don't know. Anyway, you have to play as yourself but in an overblown version of yourself, such as, if your a nurse your now a Doctor, and a great Doctor who knows everything about being a doctor, if you've ever served in the army then your nowa Brigadier General :P
It's really cute, you stay in character and you have this big feast while trading stories, but then a murder mystery will break out and an actor playing Sherlock Holmes comes in. It was organised who was the killer from the start of the party.
As for the movie, it reminds me of that Van Helsing movie, silly dumb but probably fun.
That isn't Sherlock Holmes - it's a joke.

You want Sherlock Holmes - watch the BBC series with Jeremy Brett.
I may saunter on down to the movie-theatre and have a butchers. I'm sure the historical inaccuracies will bug me, though.
I loved everything about it except the plot. Hopefully they can do better in the sequal. Robert Downey Jr. is fantastic as always.

Jeremy Brett is the man. 8)
I thought it was a good film, so long as you watched it without Sherlock Holmes in mind.Who is meant to be a gentleman of impeccable sophistication is essentially an early twentieth century Gregory House. He's an undoubted genius but has little people skills and takes a great deal of pleasure in tormenting Wilson...I mean, Watson.AirGuitarist87
The "sophisticated gentleman" was introduced in previous tv and film adaptations. In the books, Holmes is a crack addict who'd be wallowing in his own filth if it weren't for Watson.

You do realise that House was written to be "a modern day Sherlock Holmes" right? The name "House" was chosen because it is synonymous with home and "Wilson" was chosen because it sounds like Watson

I don't really find the House explanations at the end of the episode very satisfying though, mostly because I have no idea what most of the medical jargon they use mean, so it's really just him spewing a bunch of words that have no meaning to me.
I went to see Holmes opening day, but I thought this movie was crap. The acting was brilliant, the music was awesome(so much so that I might buy the OST one day, if it exists), and the costumes/settings were gorgeous and historical. The story however, was crap. I mean my god, we knew who the villain(villian? spelling) was the entire time and the fact there was no character development practically ruined this movie. I didn't see any growth in the way the characters interacted, nor did I care for them.
