Although I know that this board has plenty of children in it, I'd still like all of your opinions on this subject.

I was listening to some person talking about how children (under 18 and living with parents) should not have rights. Rights, being that they shouldn't have the right to choose what clothes they wear, or to have a cell phone, or to go out and stay out with their friends when they want, ect. He believes that since they're living with their parents, they should do what they parents say, regardless. And he said, quote "If they don't like it, when they turn 18 they can pack up and leave". He also brought up that he knows a 13 year old with a cell phone, and he carries it around so that his parents know where he's at.

Now, I'm not saying that kids shouldn't have guidance or discipline. But I do believe that children deserve some rights. They're people afterall, just little people, and they deserve to have some rights of their own. Don't you agree, or am I just a child complaining?

I think it depends on the kid. Most need help in the form of guidance, structure and discipline. It's pretty clear to see which kids have that, and which don't.

Of course. If children have no rights, then parents are free to abuse their children physically and emotionally with no legal reprocussions.

It is such a hard issue because you really need to get down into what things children should be allowed to decide and what things are too important/dangerous for them to decide....

It is the parents choice, and I'm not trying to tell anyone how to raise their kids. But it just kind of makes me upset when some people say that kids shouldn't have rights. It's like they're treating them like robots who are at their command, which isn't right imo.

They do have rights but they should obey there parents unless the are told to do something immoral and against their conscience (ie. steal, if a pregant teenagers parents coerce her to have an abortion,etc.). But as for the cell phone, if the parents are paying for it they have a right to control it and as for the clothes if the kids are dressing inappropriately then the parents have a right to crackdown.

the funny thing is that kids do have rights and always will, there is no way of taking those rights away because it would go against our human rights, people who say kids shouldn't have rights are expressing their right to say that but i'd take no stock of it because they are probably bitter or something and surely they where kids once.

Limited rights. When they're 13 and want to go out at 3 in the morning I think they should require a parents permision first, they're generally not responsible enough to stay safe and out of trouble. They definately shouldn't have the right to vote, because then we're gonna get the candidate that promises cookies for all.

Pretty much he de-humanizing anyone under the age of 18 because they dont have the ability/oppurtunity to fend completely for themselves. It's flat out wrong to say that any person, no matter age, disability or crime deserves no rights.

Everyone has rights. Including kids and including the smallest and most innocent of our children in the womb.

And I pretty much agree with you. They shouldn't be allowed to dress inappropriately, or go out at 3:00 a.m. whenever they want. But it's when some parents take away everyones basic freedom of choice that gets me. But, I guess every parent has their way.

i think obey is a prett strong word, respect and listen to, heed their advice, yeah, but obey is a very strong word, after all your parents are the reason you exsist and apart from the few parents in the world who don't really deserve to be parents (i mean those people who neglect and beat their kids) you'll generally love your parents and will listen to them, that is untill you hit puberty then you'll do everything in your power to irritate your parents and be anti-social but at the end of the day you'll do some stupid things and learn from your mistakes. i guess my point is that kids will be kids regardless of if they had rights or not and not giving your kids rights would be bad because it wouldn't teach them responsibility they'd grow up expecting everything on a plate.

Of course we should. 18 to choose clothes, have a cell, and hang out with friends??? What an outrage...which loser said something like that?

Tell me what makes them less of a person and I may see the point in the "children shouldn't have rights" argument.

i agree with all of that except crime, minor crimes fair enough but anyone who takes another life or destroys someone elses life (rape or child abuse) should not be given any rights whatsoever

Kids do have rights that protect them from physical and emotional harm, but as for clothes, cell phones, curfews, and whatever else it's up to the parents. Some are more strict than others and that's just life. Sounds like the guy you heard on the radio was just another windbag that rants about how kids have everything these days... As I see it (and at the risk of sounding old), if you have a roof over your head, clothes on your back, and food in your mouth, the rest is just perks. No one had a cell phone when I went to school (and that was only ten years ago), but most of what I got as a teenager I worked and paid for myself. I didn't have a car or cell phone until college, and most kids that I see in high schools these days seem to expect it (now I sound old!) and have never worked a day in their life. Fact is, it's all part of that growing up BS and blah blah blah...

Heh, how did you know I heard him on the radio (amateur), because you're right. He was talking to some other guy about it, and he agreed.

Yeah, I've been told the "we didn't have a (modern gadget) when we were kids" speech many times myself. In fact, every kid probably hears it. That's when we tell them "Well, this isn't the 50s/60s/70s anymore", lol.

ha ha, yeah every kid hears it... especially when us old-timers talk to each other... but I work with people that are all 50 or older and I still hear it!:P It will be one of those issues that never goes away...

Parents dont own their children, children have minds of their own, and the children should be able to use the rights that by law are given to them.

Just because some parents are too lazy to take control of their children, does not mean that the children should have their rights take away, that is plain moronic. If anything, bad parents should have restricted rights, not children.

Bad parents make me sick.

Very hard disscussion because kids should have the right to choose what clothes they wear to an extent. it works like that for everything. Kid should be able to hang out at a party but not with frugs/alcohol.

They should have certain universal rights for sure. The right to safety, the right to food and water and all the necessities of life.

Obv. stuff like the right to a cell phone, wouldn't be included.

Children actually do have a lot of rights in this country and rightfully so but some of the things that you mentioned and that many kids complain about aren't really rights at all, they're more like privileges. Since I'm sure many of those kids don't work and everything they have has been provided to them by their parents and are supported by them I don't think they really need to be complaining about the lack of a cell phone, being able to hang out with friends, etc., etc. seeing as in many other countries they'd be lucky to have at least a quarter of the things they take for granted here.
