pc's are cheaper, for better products.
mac os x is nice looking, but its pretty limiting.
i would just buy a pc
yeah, I can't really find any reason to recommend a mac.
But my friend does a lot of drawing, and says macs are better for photo/movie editing. But the truth is you can buy the exact same software for Windows.
A lot of Mac fanboys say Macs don't get viruses. I'm pretty sure that's not true. And anyways, if you buy a good antivirus, and you keep the computer for 5 years, it will still end up costing somewhere around $200, and $200 + the PC's price is still far less expensive than a Mac would cost.
If you just want to AIM/do homework, a cheap PC will be fine. I'm not sure what low-end rigs run for, but if money is an issue you can always go on ebay/craigslist and buy a used system for a really good price.
But since this is a gaming website, the votes will probably be very stacked, since PCs dominate in the gaming world.
I personally prefer the iMac. This board has a huge bias against them though. So expect to see a lot of pro-pc replies. However there is nothing wrong with pcs. Both Windows Vista and MAC OS X are fine, Mac OS X just looks better and is more user friendly. I don't see how price is a big factor, personally I would never buy a PC that didn't cost as much as a regular Mac($1500).ElectronicMagic
1500 is gonna get you a much better pc.
i acutally only paid 1000 for mine, and with the specs i got, i would have to pay 2 for mac.

That pc can play the best looking and most demanding game of all time (crysis) on very high settings at lower resolutions........ So how come you wouldn't pay less than $1500 for a pc ?? You seem bias to me since that $1500 mac has is comparable to a $500 pc......
A Linux-based PC if you want a functional computer, A Windows-based PC if you want a insecure and unstable PC or a MAC if you want a fashion accessory.foxhound_fox
Fixed ;)
I love my Mac, but I use it for Music Composition, Production, Recording, Editing, etc, etc. I use Logic (Mac only and is pretty much the standard for composition at this point - Tom Salta, Bill Brown, etc, etc use Logic) and ProTools.
If you just wanna screw around on the internet, then I guess just buy a PC.
Buy a PC with Windows or Linux.
If you want a fashion accessory and if you're a total noob on how to use computers, get a Mac.

If you don't mind the fact you can't play very many games, go Mac. Ignore the guys who get all up in arms screaming "PC!" and them using shorthand in their messages. This is coming from someone who owns a PC.
Better yet, I can tell you're thinking about getting a Mac and you want one. Do what you want. You're better off going to a Mac board and asking why they are so good, instead of a Pro-PC board like this and asking about Macs and PC's. The Demographic for this place is mostly PC Windows users, then Linux users, then lastly Mac users. You're in the wrong place to be asking about this one.

More bang for your buck. He seems like a casual PC user. Mac's are for the most part casual machines. Super User-Friendly. Clean interface. Nice look to them also.

windows is for casuals, and if he decides to learn a bit more about things its there.
Macs are styleish and nice looking, but a PC will get the job done for a cheaper price.omfg_its_dally
you can always buy a stylish case for a pc, i think you can even get old mac cases on ebay which should work with some tinkering

but then he'll just get rubish given to him by mac owners, best idea is to get each board to give you the cheapest compouter for what you want to do then pick the cheapest of the two

I would not call Macs "Casual Machines". I would call them "The expensive fad machine". Macs are nice. They are also extremely expensive. It is sort of a "You get what you pay for" situation, except It's not like the extra grand is going to make everything he does amazing. For what he needs, a $500 PC would be plenty overkill.

I don't own a Mac and I am not a Mac fanboy, but here is my opinion. My friend's family only uses Macs and every time I go over his house I never have problems with it. In all honesty I think that Macs are much more attractive than your average PC (technically a Mac is a PC but most people use PC to refer to a Windows based computer). For example the iMac is only a monitor with the whole PC built in including speakers (this is one of the reasons the price point is higher than tower PCs with comparable specs). This means that there are only three cables to manage assuming that you chose the wired keyboard and mouse options which in the case of the wireless option you would only have one cable to plug into a wall socket. Three cables is much less than your standard Dell desktop with the tower, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and speakers all requiring seperate cables.
I think that OS X is attractive and runs really well and is much faster and more user friendly than any XP based PC I have owned. However Vista is very comparable and my personal opinion is that it is more attractive than Mac OS X. Although many people complain about problems with Vista, most come from people who base their opinions of the operating system on heresay and what other people have told them. When I finally used Vista myself I never experienced any glitches, slowness, or crashes. With the release of SP1 there is even less problems with the OS than the minimal amount there was before. Look up the Mohave experiment for more information to base your operating system decision on. Again I have used OS X and it is great for editing movies (iMovie and optional Mac only editing software), music (Garage Band and optional Mac only editing software), or photos and is great for surfing the web, checking your email, listening to music (iTunes) and doing homework (Mac supports Microsoft Office and optional iWork software). However Vista is just as capable of doing those things with its proprietary Windows software and optional applications.
Hardware wise a Mac is usually very reliable. By purchasing a Mac you have the benefit of excellent customer support as opposed to a company like Dell and the piece of mind that your software WILL work with your hardware. The same people that made your Mac are the same people that developed the operating system and software. While a Mac is not virus proof there are virtually no viruses that will affect a Mac based on its design and with the added benefit of security software built into OS X there is really no threat of getting a virus. Although Vista is much more prone to viruses based soley on the fact that it is a Windows OS it also has more extensive built in security feature than XP and with third party programs such as Norton Anti-virus the threat of viruses is greatly diminished. On a hardware and software standpoint you may have to contact several different companies if you have a problem with your PC although most of the time the company from which you purchased your PC such as Dell will be able to assist you in problems involving hardware and software that was included in PC when you purchased it. Macs usually cost more but they are quality products and the cost usually pays off in the long run although you may be able to find an equally well built PC for cheaper.
I hope my extremely long post will help you make a decision on what computer is right for you. Hopefully you will or have done reasearch in other areas from other sources which will help make your decision more informed. I tried to make this as unbiased as possible and hopefully you take some opinions with a grain of salt. Good luck on your purchase.

Why would he pay MORE for something he does not need? I could easily say "buy a $10,000 Voodoo Omen because..." but he'd waste his money. Buy a cheap ~$500 pc, install aim, install whatever hw software you're going to use (MS Word etc) and you're done. There's no need to pay for a $600 mac with inferior hardware or a $1,000 mac that is overkill.[QUOTE="Retro_Active"]More bang for your buck. He seems like a casual PC user.
