I have always been a PC gamer my entire life, but now in univeristy I rarely have time to play any videogames. I am now required to be more involved in making research, posters, videos and powerpoint presentations. Now even with PC my knowledge is limited when it comes to making stuff such as those, I don't know anything about making videos in windows movie maker and I barely know so just a little about photoshop, let alone designing logos and stuff like that.

But I've seen some people and girls in my university do some really neat stuff with their macs, and they're always the one who's outstanding from the rest of people who utilize a PC to do these kinds of stuff.

Now I was wondering, I barely know anything about those programs, but maybe by getting a mac it would be like a starting point for me to at least get a little bit of info to start making some neat stuff?

What do you guys think?

This is absolutely the best place to ask for unbiased PC advice. My advice? Only get a Mac if you are planning on doing some serious digital design or film editing (Final Cut is vastly superior to Move Maker).

Using a Mac is much nicer for things like graphic design and movie making, as they're more designed for that sort of thing. Things like Photoshop and Sony Vegas work better, in my opinion, on a mac. Things just run smoother; but then again the old computers I used to have were family ones before I brought my own mac, so they were probably filled with a bunch of collective junk from everyone.

You can still use mac's for gaming, too, if you ever wonder later down the line. The only thing you have to look out for is to make sure that the game you want is mac compatabile. I know in the past that used to be a huge pain, but I think these days it's sometimes a lot more easier to find. Also, it's a new software to get to grips with seeing as it's not windows, but once you get used to the mac it's easy enough to use.

I say look into things more but if you think you'll like it and it won't be a waste of money, get one.

If I would, I would be getting a macbook .. I have the budget, its just that I don't want to feel like I wasted my money on something that I can't use it to even just a little of its capacity. I don't wanna use it like I would use a PC.

My major concern right now is if I would be able to LEARN how to do some neat stuff on a mac, not its price.

I would think it would be best to just learn how do it on a PC instead of shelling 1500 on a mac. A little work and a little studying can save you $1000.

I have both and find that the PC is better for admin businessy stuff and word processing.

All the free software also comes in handy.

The mac is good for music and graphics. But I am not skilled enought o make use of the capacity of my mac.

I think a macbook air will make a sweet addition to my collection of computers though.

If you want to waste money and get extremely frustrated at times. I used to think Apple products were the best...then i compared a Mac and my PC. found out which was better, simpler, and still fast.

If you're majoring in something like graphic design or video editing, I would recommend getting one. If it's just for a class, then no.

Power Point is vastly superior on PC. If you're making videos get a Mac since Final Cut (the very best in video editing software) is only available on Mac. Mac is also better for graphic design (ie: making posters). Research can go either way, however. I've been a PC user my whole life but it sounds like you want a Mac. :)The-Apostle

I only want it because I was really impressed by the work some girls did on it and I am jealous, but I guess mac doesn't get the entire credit for it as they're probably very skilled at using it.

I really wanna get good at doing these kinds of stuff (design) but I don't have the time and a PC is not the msot friendly device for that to happen.

I guess the best next thing to do if im not buying a mac is to get photoshop and Sony Vegas and learn how to use it. (which is going to be very hard)

Please do give advice if you have it guys.

I have photoshop on PC.

tbh i don't know anything about mac or apple products (never owned any) but from what i've been seeing people who do some really nice work are those with a mac, and that is why i thought i should get one?

I don't know product specific to mac other than uh, the safari browser.

Adobe products work just as well on PC as they do on Macs, trust me you don't need a Mac to do stuff like graphic design. Source: I graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design and used a Windows laptop and desktop the entire time.

Love mine too and they are awesome. I'm pretty sure a lot of them don't even own one too.

There's no doubt they're solid machines, the problem is for what most people *need* they can get in $1,000-1,500 Windows laptop as opposed to a $2,500 MBP.

For most things you'll be just using Microsoft Office for Mac, so I really don't see why you wouldn't just use a regular Windows PC. I'm not even sure whats so vastly superior in macs for graphical design.

I'd never pay that much (Or anyone) for a macbook pro though. I bought mine for $1100 and it came with a brand new Ipod touch.

I assume this was an old model or second-hand? Because the cheapest new "Macbook Pro" is base 13" model at $1,200 and I would argue that particular model shouldn't really qualify for the "Pro" moniker.

The idea that Macs are better than PCs at things like graphics design comes from the days when Macs and their monitors were specifically calibrated to match printed paper.

This hasn't been the case for years, however, and beginning with the 32-bit color graphics cards (around the Riva TNT2 era) the PCs pulled up to par as far as graphic capability and color depth (though most LCD monitors can't reach that color depth, anyway).

It's all down to which system has the programs you are most familiar with.

photoshop and other software works just as well on a windows pc as a mac.
It's just that I like OSX more than Win7 (haven't really experienced Win8 yet).
I have a macbook air and an alienware pc running win7 (for games), but my opinion is that Win7 is such a sluggish, inefficient, clunky, illogical, non streamlined operating system compared to Mountain Lion. Macs do cost a lot of money though, especially for the hardware you are getting. But to me, the user experience is better and they are great working solid machines.

I don't see why you would need a mac to do simple stuff like powerpoints. And if you really need to use a mac, doesn't your school have some at the library or somethign?

To be honest, only you can answer that question. If you don't know if you should get a Mac or not, then you probably don't need it.

My kid used to do all her Wacom/Photoshop stuff on her Mac Mini. Now, she spends more time doing those stuff on her gaming PC. Being creative is with the person. There are plenty of tools on the PC to be creative with.

FYI, Photoshop and other Adobe programs are available on PC and work just as well if not better than the Mac versions. The only reason more art students use Macs is because they're usually hipsters who know nothing about computers, and Macs are trendy and easy to use. Though, sometimes if a department only uses Macs it becomes difficult to have a PC since all their software/hardware/knowledge is Mac-specific. There are always workarounds for these situations if they crop up as long as you spot them early.

Also, unless you're actually going to be doing serious art/graphic design stuff I wouldn't even bother with art programs. Most campuses should have computer labs with any necessary software and no class is going to make an assignment that requires high-end software. The only exception might be art classes that specifically revolve around those programs, but they'll always have a computer lab to do your work in.

Adobe Premiere Pro + After Effects are good platform neutral ('cept for Linux) alternatives to Final Cut and Vegas. I like how well they integrate with the other Adobe Products especially Illustrator.

If you actually compare macs to other PCS by the SPEC, macs are the same price. Everybody laughed at apple when they released the macbook air, now everyone is copying the macbook air design. Samsung series 9 is the same, if not, more expensive than macbook air, (not to mention its a bit more affordable now). A lot of you say you can get good PCS for a lot cheaper. While true in some cases, most laptops at around 400-500 are pieces of sh*t to begin with, especially with companies like HP.

I really hate it when people here say don't waste your money, when I myself use a macbook air. I feel insulted. I use my macbook air for everything and its done fine so far. Its cool to hate I guess.

And just think of all that extra money you have to spend on software on top of that Mac purchase... Seriously, why not just get the software you need? The idea that you're artistically limited by your PC is such a farce... you'd have to be an absolute idiot in my eyes to truly believe this.
