Including the vaio. :P They're overpriced and arrive with a bunch of boatware.. or at least that has been my experience with them, I'm not sure if the VAIO TC is planning on buying will come with tons of bloatware.why not go to best buy get a laptop with the same specs as macbook except several hundred dollars cheaper?ferrari2001Because they come with Windows.

i looked in best buy and i couldnt find one tbh. I found one but it was only 100$ cheaper, came with vista, and was really heavy and pretty ugly, so id rather get the macbook when i have to go to college

I have a great reason why I use a Mac.
Logic (the DAW). ProTools also runs amillion times better on the Mac than PC (I used to have a PC based studio).
If the guy likes Mac and wants one, then he should get one.
the majority of the people here will say no, and im going to to, i own a macbook and for school its not as goodlinkin_guy109
well, just curious cause im looking for a laptop for school, what would be better?
If its a ProEgyptman786I want one of those for uni but I imagine walking to high school with one would be a pain... literally. >_>
Most people here will say no because most people here are teenagers that don't have lots of money to spend, and are gamers.
Now, with that out of the way, if money ain't a big issue for you, and you don't plan on gaming, I say go for it! Last year I bought an iMac and I really don't regret it! It's way more efficient than a similarly spec'ed PC, NEVER crashed, NEVER froze, and has all the apps you could ever need in school and then some... Add to that the ability to run Windows with bootcamp or parallels if you were to need it for whatever reason, and really it's a great product.
If your a hardcore gamer, i highly suggest Alienware laptops. Awsome graphics, and amazing connectivity.nja7Did you read his post? He's not using it for games, he needs it for school. And those would weigh so much.

but then he could get linuix for free if he wanted
I've used a MacBook at my school for the past two years. Best laptop you can buy. ^_^SolidSnake35
no doubt

he's not a gamer and if you're a gamer you shouldn't buy a laptop. If you have to you should get a light one with long battery life then use mobile internet to connect to your gaming desktop at home, then you can play through that if you really want to.

You can get expose for free on Windows of you really want it.
Live preview - you can preview video and pictures on vista. Not sure why you would ever need to preview PDF/word documents/anything else. O I forgot, you can't wait 1 second to open it.
Cover flow - O god who are you trying to fool with this. It's pretty to look at and THAT'S it. It does not help you find music anybetter than WMP.
Time Machine - Have you ever used this? Seems impractical to me.
Spotlight - a fancy name for search.
Spaces - 3d cube for Windows gives you 4 windows (why do you need anymore?) and is better eye candy than spaces.
iLife - Ok, a nice group of programs that come with OSX.
You can get a computer with better specs for the same (or less) as the Mac book and it will run Vista extremely fast. OSX is nice, but it is no way superior to Windows.

order from the websites. you can configure it the way you want. from dell's website i got a 2GHz single core processor laptop with vista premium and 1GB ram, 128MB ATi card. It works FAST with aero and other full visual stuff on, and I got no bloatware (checked with a progam). finally my school gives norton antivirus for free and I also have Avast antivirus free from cnet, so my laptop will never get virused. I got this sucker for $600 give or take $10. compare the price to $1100 for the nonpro macbook. For the $500difference I could have added more ram and a dual core processor if I wanted, AND still have a few hundred left. macbooks are the biggest ripoff ever.Antivirus slows Windows down even further... and even so, Mac OS X is far quicker anyway, plus it has numerous other features that make it a million miles better than Windows, such as expose, cover flow, quick look, time machine, iLife, live preview, spotlight and spaces.[QUOTE="SolidSnake35"][QUOTE="ferrari2001"]and Mac's come with Mac OS?? ididn't know what those were before but it seems like they're all on vista and i think they're in linuix too
It always breaks down like this. Awesome with computers:Linux, okay with computers: Microsoft, kinda bad with computers: Mac
if you are honest with yourself its not hard to know whats the right choice. although money can always be a factor with wanting a mac

Vaio these days arent overpriced like in the past.
why don't you guys post links for these superior and cheaper laptopssun-sonvery close to the Inspiron 1501 that I'm typing from. owned And from HP: owned again. I'm sure if the apple fanboys (not you guys ;) ) would actually do research on websites other that fruitcomputers.com they would see there are great pc laptops at much better prices.
why don't you guys post links for these superior and cheaper laptopssun-sonEh do you really need a link for that ?? There everywhere hell even bestbuy which does't have the best prices have dual core laptops with 3gigs of ram and a 250gb harddrive for $800 . A macbook with that would cost you around $1300-$1400 from what ive seen on there website which is alot considering you could get a nice gaming laptop for that range with a 8800M GTS.
I just want a general laptop to take to school. I'm not going to be using it for games but I want something that's reliable. I was thinking about getting a regular macboook (not pro) for just basic internet usage and other school priorities. If I won't be getting a Macbook my other laptop I had in mind was a Vaio. Anyone have any insight?jharv
what Vaio are you looking @?Lke I said in another post. I got a new Vaio @ CC for 700 with a centrino duo 2 with 2gb of RAM (exp to 4gb) and its built with quality. It comes with bloatware but that can be removed by going to control panal and delete those programs. Anyway pick w/e, just not a macbook...

if youre just using it for basic stuff then whatever, but I would recommend a laptop because theyre cheaper even with better specs than macbooks
Hey I have an idea!
Go to a Circuit City/Best Buy. Use some of the laptops and get a feel for the interface.
Get in your car and drive to an Apple store. Use some of the Macbooks and get a feel for the interface.
Decide which one is more comfortable/intuitive and which you enjoy using more. Bam! Problem solved. If you only want it for basic things, who cares about the hardware really? Which will you ENJOY using more every day for homework/papers/email? I think trying them out will help you a lot, it did for me. As soon as I played with a Mac for awhile, I was sold for life.
I tried a Mac, but I didn't really like it. They're really overpriced too, and I can get the same specs for much cheaper. So it's Windows for me.
But go ahead and try one out, and if you like it go ahead and buy it.
Windows isn't suited for expose. Live previews let's you see what's contained within a document just from the thumbnail. I'll take zero seconds over constant clicking and closing, which does not take just one second. Cover flow isn't just for music. Combined with live preview, it's useful in the finder too. I don't see what's impractical about automatic backups. A search that Microsoft attempted to copy and failed. Anything freeware or otherwise isn't as good as an integrated program that comes with the OS. And a courtesy that Microsoft will never provide with its own software.SolidSnake35
I would love to hear your reason on how the serach bar in Vista fails. It finds what you type in, therefore it works.
Windows isn't suited for expose? Makes no sense; please expalin.Time Machine is just something I would never use, and I am guessing you have never used as well. Why do I always need my stuff being backed up? My computer isnt going to crash and I can just copy/paste all my folders onto my USB HDD every 6 months or so. Time Machine isn't something I would brag about having.
Again I am guessing you never used some of the freeware programs out there that work just fine and have tons of customizable options.
Cube > Spaces
Cover flow is still pointless and you can no way say it is an effective way to locate a folder.
Live preview I guess can be useful for someone who doesn't organize their files in folders and doesn't name them. Idk, I guess I can see it being an ok feature for PDF's.
O and for the record, double clicking a word file and letting it open word to view it does take 1 second. Well, on my computer at least .

Spotlight organizes the search results in categories and isn't just a search tool anyway. I use it as a dictionary and a calculator too. Another plus over Windows, somewhat related, is that OS X spell checks every word you type in any program. Expose is more than just that particular use that you're displaying there. For one, it involves the dashboard... which Vista copied somewhat with the sidebar full of widgets. I'm guessing that doesn't integrate with your third party version of expose though. The idea is that if you delete a file by accident, you can skip back and retrieve it. I assume many people do backup regularly though... just in case. Also, dragging stuff to another HDD takes time. I've never cared for the cube effect. Looks messy. Is it practical to switch back and forth quickly? And can you drag programs between desktops and set certain programs to open only in designated desktops? Cover flow is good for flicking through images and very good for videos, since you can play them within the finder. Live preview allows you to locate a file quicker than reading file names, regardless of folder structure. I keep my files organized but I still find things quicker through memory of image over text. I said clicking and closing, assuming that you didn't know which file you wanted. And no plans for a nice free software package from MS?SolidSnake35
No, no free software from MS :(. Well they did give me Windows Defender and this over the internet spyware scanner for free so I guess that's a start.
Vista search does put the results into categories. Sorry, I compleatly forgot about the dictionary built into Spotlight which I actually used a couple of times, touche. Google is the way I look up the correct spelling of words; FF search bar is the way to go.
No idea why I would want my widgets to show up when I use Expose. The "clone" I have does what it needs to do. I don't find myself using it all that much.
My final thought on cover flow/preview: I am just used to using a computer without them, you are used to using it with them. It's not so much a better way to look through your files as it is a different way.
It only takes a couple of minutes to copy over my GB's of data, not a big deal since I only do it once a year. Start copy, go to the bathroom, come back and it's done. No hassle, no way you can complain about wasting time. And how does one go about "accidentally" deleting an important file not only once from the directory itself but then a second time from the recycling bin. O boy.
The program that runs the cube can be changed to just lay the desktops out, stack them or set them up in a host of crazy ways. It's actually very cool to spin the cube and yes, it is easy to do so. Yes, it's easy to move programs (by dragging) from 1 screen to the other. To be honest I don't know if you can set certian programs to open in one desktop or the other, I never messed around with all the options. This, like exspose, is another feature I don't find myself needing to use all too often.
Sorry for the long reply time, I am trying to change/eat/get ready to go out soon. Not sure if I missed something or if there is even anything left to say but I'll check back later if you replyed. Now run off and have some fun looking up words in spotlight ;)

it reminds me of the ds phat vs. ds lite: my ds phat was dropped a few tims and goes on nstrong while it seems the ds lite's case could crack easily. My 1501 was in my backpack 4 days a week throughout my 2 semesters in college and has no problems whatsoever, while my friend's macbook hard drive "jumps" a little after carrying it for a similar time in his bag. Please Log In to post.
