So my school is holding this blood "fundraiser" where the Red Cross or something comes in and we donate blood. I was wondering if I shuld do this. Does anyone know the repercussions of donating blood or the "side effects"? I am just very ignorant about the entire process, could someone fill me in?
Well I guess it would be kinda unpleasant having it removed, but as far as I know it's safe and you'd be donating it to a very worthy cause. If you're willing to go through with it, I'd respect you if you did.
There's not much to it really, they ask you questions about your health and such. Then they stick a needle in your arm and sap some blood out. Then you'll get some free cookies and juice for your donation:)
Eat a *lot* beforehand, and try to get some caffeine in your system. The lack of blood will make you weak, or make you faint. You also have to fill out a questionaire (if you're gay/bi, don't donate. Dunno why, but it's a stupid rule implored by the blood donation department). Sleep early; I overslept from one of my classes because I underestimated how tired I was. Conclusively, give them only your e-mail to contact you; they become nasty telemarketers after your first donation, encouraging you (sometimes daily) to donate.
What does it feel like having your blood "sapped" out? Does it hurt? I know I can take it, but I just don't want to be surprised when my blood is sucked out of me.
Drink lots and LOTS of water. Me and a friend gave blood at my school two weeks ago and I drank lots of water throughout the day (which they tell you to do) and he didn't and he was nearly passing out at the end of the day.
i've done twice at school. all you do is lay there with a needle in your arm. it only hurts for a second when they put it in, then it's slightly uncomfortable. you're not supposed to exercise or do anything strenuous for 24 hours (although i forgot and moved some heavy cabinets in a later class that day then raked leaves when i came home). there is a slight chance you could pass out, although i didn't see anyone pass out when i was donating. i don't think there are really any other side affects, it's pretty safe and you generate the blood back pretty quickly. there really isn't a good reason not to. you'll help save lives.
Effects could range from nothing to light headedness to fainting I way about 108 pounds and I've donated twice first time= a little dizzy second time I (ironically) almost fainted

The more your blood is sucked, the weaker you feel. You get sort of a dizzy feeling, and your body suddenly feels heavier than usual. Getting the needle inside hurts a bit, but it's only an immediate, small pain.

I've had two blood tests and they're the worst experiences I've ever had in my life. It was the most sickening feeling and I felt dizzy and faint. And that was just from having a sample taken never mind pints! However I know people who've had them loads and are fine, and also people who get used to the feeling. It's just really unpleasant but it's for a good cause and if I wasn't such a wuss about it I'd donate :)

Wow, you're skinny for your height. They always take 1 pint, regardless of height I run track (went to All-States - very proud of that), and I'm basically all muscle. And 1 pint is basically a milk carton, right?

yes, yes they will, Ive donated twice at my school and when ever there is a blood drive within what seems to be a 100 mile radius they call and ask if I will give blood again.
