If the local street gang exists just for social reasons (just for people to join and socialise with each other, to be apart of a group), I don't see why not. If it's anything more than that, definitely not. There are other and much better ways to look cool and tough, such as simply keeping fit and looking good. :)
Are your local gangs really hardcore? if they are i wouldnt, whats so fun about getting shot at and having gang wars? gangs are for stupid people, youve got a bunch of people that have your back, thats it, and btw there supposed to give you a bandana when you join, people in gangs just want the protection and the infamy or however you want to put it. Btw cops label you with crimes you most likely didnt do. Oh and i forget what its called but you have to go through a test in order to join gangs, like either getting the hell beat out of you, or killing someone. In my opinion its not worth it.
If you need a hobby, I would definitely consider going a street gang. Just remember learning all the choreography can be very challenging, and you usually have to do the dance moves in perfect unison with the rest of your gang.
