I got called for a job offer a few weeks ago for a dishwasher position. I wasn't called in for an interview, the manager just asked me on the phone what my previous dishwasher experience was. I told him and he explained to me that they were looking for a dishwasher for 2-3 nights a week. He asked me to come in for my first shift the next day, and I did.

Then he said he'll give me one night a week at first and give me more shifts later on. I accepted. Yesterday as I was leaving the house to go to work for my third shift (which was also the third week), he calls me on the phone and says there's a shortage of work so they had to cut off a few employees for the night.Of course I was really pissed, didn't show it on the phone though.

So now I'm thinking I should find a new job to replace this one since it looks like I'll barely be working there. Imean, the boss never even asked me why I left my last job. Does this sound like even a permanent position? And what's with changing his mind to giving me one night a week only?

Definetly look for new work. Sounds pretty pathetic what you got there.

Not sure if serious, but yes, immediately. Not even sure if I would bother for that job just once a week in the meantime.

I would find a new job.

Also, if you are working one night a week it's not perminant, it's casual and they can call you up at any time to say you are not working. However if you are on your way to work, as you said you were, you could have possibly argued with him about it. I know there's a rule here that if you have already left for work you are technically at work, from a legal standpoint, and the minimum shift you can do then is three hours.

Where do you live?

Australia.

The "if you have already left for work you are technically at work" rule only applies when you are travelling to and from work directly. If you stop for fuel or at a friends house it doesn't. For example, if you get into a car accident whilst driving to work you are covered by work's insurance and not your own.

A permanent dishwasher position? Haha. That sounds horribly depressing and pathetic. Why would anyone ever want such a position to be permanent?thegerg

If you want money, then yes.
