ok so ive never tried smoking but i started wondering why people smoke even though they know its bad for you.... dont say addiction because there are many ways to stop smoking. thus even if you are addicted you can call a quit line or something and start on your way to stop. so what is it about smoking? im considering starting just to study what is up with it but than even smokers ironically tell me never to smoke even when they themselves light up right in front of me :Sflowerbug
Smoking what? Cigarettes?
it sucks, you cant breathe for crap, you get cancer, you have to have itinyourface_12
I'd say this sums it up pretty well.
I was about to until I saw how much those nicotine patches can cost; $40. Screw that, I'll invest my money into something a little more worthwhile. I was just curious about it, I wasn't thinking about becoming a full-blown smoker, but I am not even taking any risks. :|DeeJayInphinity
dont think i will either am just curious about what people get from it

A buzz.

It's very relaxing, lowers the old stress level down quite a bit, that's about all I get from it.

That sums it up pretty well. It's not something I really recommend to people, but I enjoy it.
I quit smoking 2 years ago, (after smoking a pack and a half a day for 8 years) and I managed to quit pretty easily!!
I enjoyed smoking while I did and am not anti it at all.
If you smoke or you don't... your gonna die anyway and who the hell wants to live till there 80!!! (not me)
Of course you should start! Everyone smokes! You're not cool if you don't.
You shouldn't be asking this question since it obviously is bad for you. On the other hand, I enjoy smoking too much to stop, but that's just my personnal opinion and I don't think I should promote smoking...
If you smoke, don't smoke too much.
The thing is,the damage to your body wont repair,no matter how long you live, the damage to your lungs will remain. Wetall_basic
Uh that's not true. Every cigarette damages your lungs. Your lungs can heal, especially if you quit smoking.
On the other hand, if you smoke for a long time, some damage will not repair.

that is very true
only if your talking about weed or hookah, dont smoke ciggarettes, theyre horrible for yousovereign_22
*** I agree.
However, its not like if you smoke a pack you're going to become addicted (unless you choose to continue to buy after that). I mean, I've smoked recreationally for the last 4 years, and I'm not in the least addicted.
PROS - Gives you a great, light headed feeling, great stress reliever, good way to break ice with new people (who also smoke obviously).
CONS- Much more difficult to quit once you start, more difficult than you seem to think. I was lucky, I only smoked for about 8 months before I stopped for good, but I could have easily been addicted for a much longer time.
Conclusion - Make up your own mind. Try it if you want, but do NOT make a habit of it.
Also, all the people saying smoke hookah or weed instead? Ignore them. Inhaling any kind of smoke into your lungs is not good for you so just go for a jog instead for Christ's sake.

But the government says!!!!
If you experiment with smoking you also take the risk of never going back. Don't mess with it. I experimented with it over 20 years ago and now I can't imagine life without them.

That's how I started too :P
You won't like it at first, but if you keep at it, you probably will like it. The addiction is not a big deal, I sure feel the need to smoke at least twice a day but that's it. And I've been smoking for 6 years, sometimes 10 smokes in one day. I guess it's different with everyone.
Over time, you will see quite a difference in your pocket though (10$/pack over here).

Atheos-Arkhaios
Drinking lots of beer is pretty bad too, and much more expensive.

1) Smoking is desirable because it gets you high.
And don't anyone DARE tell me that smoking doesn't do anything for you. That it has no pleasant effects, and that people only do it to look cool.
Fads don't last more than five THOUSAND freaking years if there's not a tangible benefit. Smoking tobacco gets people high, end of story.
2) I smoke even though I know that it's bad for me because I don't like life and getting terminal cancer would give me a good excuse to take a ride on the old bullet train.
3) Furthermore, I like smoking because smoking just feels good.
4) And yes, smoking DOES make me look cool.
5) And also, smoking gives me something to do. Like, if I'm at work, and I need to take a break, smoking gives me an excuse to take a break. I can't smoke while I'm working, and while I'm on my break I'm actually doing something (smoking). But if I were to take a break, and was not going to smoke, why take a break at all? What's the point in sitting on my ass doing nothing? If I'm not gonna smoke, I'd might as well skip my break and keep on working.
The joys of smoking include:
- Shortness of breath
- Lack of appetite
- Disrupted sleeping patterns
- Tar stains on fingers and teeth
- Tobacco odour lingers
- Increased chances of lung cancer
- A waste of money
- A quick addiction that's hard to come off of

Shortness of breath...I still work my ass off more than my lazy non-smoking coworkers.
Lack of appetite...good. Maybe that's why I'm not fat.
Disrupted sleeping patterns...I think working 75 hours a week disrupts my sleep more than a few cigarettes.
Tobacco odor lingers...good. Tobacco smells good.
A waste of money...I could tell you that videogames are a waste of money too. At which point you'd reply that they aren't a waste of money for you because you enjoy playing them.

MrGeezer, have you ever been handed a Marijuana Cigarette by the Friendly Stranger?
Ganja makes you look cool, as explained in this educational film aimed at school children.
