I do not have a problem with it. It is a movie after all.

They also killed kids in Mimic.
They also exploded a kid in From Dusk Til Dawn.
They also killed a baby in Trainspotting.
There are tons of other examples, I mentioned mimic below. From dusk till dawn is a good examplem he died in such a painful way. For a cheesy movie I thought his death was pretty sad:(
I don't see any real difference between kids and adults, though kids can carry more shock value (if only because it's so rare to see it). The only examples of kids being killed I can think of right now are Pan's Labyrinth, the many adaptions of Macbeth and Battleship Potemkin, which obviously dealt with the issue sensibly.

Didn't that kid get nailed in Gladiator? With the horses. Anyway, people get as upset over animals sometimes too, CGI horses in LOTR, not really. But if you watch the Unrated The Grudge they show the guy snap the cat's neck and throw it's dead body against the wall, pretty cool.

problem would be that if a kid watches it he might not be mature enough, and he could relate to the boy killed, thus making him a person that is scared easily....

I remember that:lol: God AVP2 was terrible.
yeah, i had nightmares with my braincells dying and my poor money left homeless...
the ending was pretty much one of the worst cheapest and most stupid endings ive ever seen
The reason they don't is simply that it bothers people, and thus will cut into revenue. Plain and simple.
Now, do I think they "should?" I don't know. That's kind of an odd question. Certainly there are contexts where it makes sense and is rather necessary to the story being told. I could name some movies, but then that would potentially be spoilers. In most movies where people die though (action movies, suspense movies), it is generally rather unneeded, and will only serve to leave most viewers feeling "tricked" into seeing something they didn't want to (probably similarly to how a lot of people felt when they watched Hostel.)
This topic inevitably reminded me of a clip from Maximum Overdrive, in which a kid is run over by a steamroller. Not at all graphic, really, but the thought of it is quite disturbing. :o
The first kid I saw killed in a movie was in the remake "The Blob". Kid in the sewer got caught and came out looking like the dude from RoboCop after he got chemicals poured on him. It wasn't a pretty sight, but it was wicked cool. I don't think kids should be given special treatment in films just because they are kids. It makes no sense when a bunch of adults get killed in a movie, yet the dog or a kid miraculously makes it out in one piece.
