I just saw a news story about this device that makes this annoying sound that only teenagers can hear. Some places like convenient stores are using it to prevent teens from hanging out and loitering. The ACLU wants it banned. There's some links that talk about this device. I'm kind of neutral about it. What's your thoughts?

No. Their shop, they can do what they want. They're keeping crime/unwanted people away and it affects a small portion of innocent people: big deal.

Why? Even a store is technically a piece of "private" property and you are their by invitation and it can be revoked at any time.

As you age most (not all) people loose the ability to hear certain high frequency sounds. Younger people on the other hand can still hear them.

as you get older you cant hear frequencies as high as you could when you were younger and its at a frequency that anyone under a certain age can here but most people over that age can hear.

Yes they should get rid of it...simply because it doesn't work as it says. It is something that people simply are unable to hear as they get older, I'm not a teen but I can still detect the noise very clearly.

I think it's kind of funny myself.

Manager-"You kids have been here all day and are distracting our employees, if you aren't going to buy anything then please leave"

Teens- "You can't make us leave, it's our 1st amendment right to express our freedom!"

Manager-*Turns on sound gun*

Teens-" AAARRGGGHHHH!"

Yeah, kinda. It's only a bit higher frequency than what adults can hear. The teens pretty much FLY out of the store but the adults are unaffected.

Teens have described the noise as a thousand fingernails scratching a black board. Sounds like torture/abuse to me.

Isnt this discrimination? Not to mention, if it hurts that much, wouldnt it be some form of assault? Sounds fishy.

Stores are on private property. If the proprietor feels that they don't want you there anymore they can at any time ask you to leave. If you don't they can either call the police or use this.

Annoying sound only teenagers can Hear? You mean Paramore? I dont see how the whole thing works, what about deaf teenagers? or teenagers with MP3 players or iPods? or small animals? I think they should just play the 'brown noise' outside shops, you wouldnt want to come back after hearing that

It's a pain in the butt. I went in to a convenience store last night, because I had to pay cash for gas, and they were using one, cuz bunch of white wannabe gangstas were hanging around. Of course I heard it, and was irritated.

Yeah..I never said they couldnt. Targetting teens is whats discrimatory, I mean, why not make a device that targets anybody? Not just teens. Im sure i've seen an old person more than once over stay their welcome at the newspaper rack in a convenience store, or a middle aged man looking at playboys.

The device can be misused, just like everything else that is like it. People misuse guns but does that mean they should be banned outright? No. It is a moderately effective device that dissuades teenagers from causing trouble where it is not needed. Blame the ass who is misusing the device, not the device itself.

That's weird i remember seeing a story where teens were downloading a tone that did the same thing so they could use their phone's in school.

I find it hard to believe considering that the teens hanging around aren't going to hear it anyway, since they are probably the same ones that have their radio so loud its vibrating someones windows a couple of blocks away.

You can go wherever the **** you want as long as it is on public property and the proprietors of private establishments don't have any need to ask you to leave. This device is designed to be used to prevent lawless or disruptive behavior, if someone is misusing it, it is the person, not the device.

Then that wouldn't be getting to the bottom of the problem. People who want guns to use to kill others will always be able to get them, illegal or not. Just like drugs.

I know :P I haven't experienced it, just heard kids describe it on the news. But if they use it on teens just cause they're hanging around close to a store I still think it's wrong.

Mosquito example?

But the things they use to get rid of shops also get rid of me :\
