Illegal hoax and or language that incites an imminent lawless action?

Certainly could be argued for in a court of law... right? Anyone want to help me make a citizen's arrest? I'm fairly well off and live in California (where he lives and broadcasts from), so I could try to make it happen... but I'll need help.

For being an idiot?

Too many people would have to go to prison.

You can't lie with malice, particularly when the words incite (or can incite) a lawless action. Doing what he did is like saying "fire" in a super market, or "bomb" on an airplane.

You can shout "pneumonia" in a hospital.

the biggest reason he won't is because he made no money...

Had Camping made a fortune on this whole thing, fraud chargers are a possibility... but Camping lost money...

This. Any money that was donated to the cause was spent accordingly. No fraud took place, as Camping gained nothing.

First you would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he was in fact lying, opposed to honestly believing something that was wrong.

Incorrect. Proof beyond a reasonable doubt is not required to make an arrest.

Fair enough. I was thinking about a future conviction, which I think would be almost impossible to reach. So, I don't think he would be arrested. Also, out of curiousity I listened to his program a number of times and I never heard him solicit money, nor have I ever heard him say anything to "incite" anyone. But, like I said I only listened a handfull of times.

I think the TC should learn and understand exactly what making a citizen's arrest means and what the laws are in regards to it. Sure you could detain Mr. Camping (or at least attempt to), but he hasn't done anything arrestable, so you'd likely be facing a civil suit and possibly criminal charges yourself.

I think he honestly thought that he was helping people, he isn't necessarily a bad person per se, just crazy. I don't see him being arrested anytime soon

People killed themselves and their families in fear of imminent Armageddon. Others just gave up everything they had.

They did it based on information given to them by Camping that they trusted; had Camping not given them this information, they would not have committed these acts.

Not that it would change my opinion on the matter of the legal question posed by TC, but do you have any evidence that this actually happened here?

You can see mentions here and there in the news. It's par for the course whenever someone makes an apocalypse prediction and people believe it; people give up their possessions thinking they won't need it anymore, they kill their kids so they won't have to suffer judgment day, etc.

Still, Camping is at the very, very least partially responsible for these acts. He fed people misinformation and these people act on this information, leading to their harm.

True, I would say he is partially responsible.

They still chose to act.

I can't say for certain that you are wrong, but I've been looking for the past few days and haven't heard of a single murder-suicide even partially linked to Camping. And with all the media attention this guy got in the days/weeks before..............

Regardless, as out of his mind as I find this guy to be, I'm pretty much convinced he sincerely believed what he was preaching, or at least I haven't found any evidence to the contrary.

Ehh, that's a pretty sketchy argument. It's not like he told people to kill themselves or to sell their posession. If I were to tell someone "there is no God" and they lose their faith and hope and kill themself should I be held liable for that? Or if I were to say to them "possessions are meaningless" and they sell everything they own and give away all their money am I responsible for their sudden poverty?

Actually, now that I think about it, you're right that he never said anything even remotely close to that (at least that I'm aware of).

Here in NY, Family Radio is 94.7fm and for a couple of years I've listened to that station (when I'm in the mood for that kind of choir-gospel-Christian-type-music). I've turned to that dial during his show many times and started to listen to him more frequently as all of the hype about May 21 got into high gear. He never said anything about people killing themselves to avoid whatever was about to take place. If anything, he said that Believers would be "brought up" and it would be the non-believers that would be left behind to pay for their sins. Anyone that was a "Camping Follower" would have actually taken comfort knowing that the time was now, as they would soon be in paradise.

I've witnessed him committing a felony. California allows for citizens arrest. I would detain him until actual law enforcement officers arrived. What do i need to learn and understand? You can't just do what he's done and get away with it... for the third time... regardless of him making money. And oh yeah, he did make money. Where are some of you getting that he didn't? He made millions in donations. What are you guys talking about? So add fraud.

Incorrect. Know the law.

If your words are meant to lead to an illegal action, it is illegal. You can even advocate that committing an illegal act is ok, but you cannot say something that will cause it.

I would argue his words were "maliciously" meant to incitelawless action. Oh and he was liar who committed mass fraud by exploiting the beliefs of literally millions of people.
