I'm a huge fan of Ovechkin. Having said that though, I'd say Sid the Kid is probably the overall better hockey player.

I think that Sid is a better all-around player. Ovie is a better scorer 1-on-1, and has a laser shot (though Sid has improved his shot a bit recently), but Sid always knows where the other nine players are, it seems, has eyes on the back of his head, and used his wingers better than anyone in the league. Also, Ovie has a bad temper, and hits to injure. He needs to tone that part down a bit if he wishes to have a long career, imo.

Ovenchkin is superior to Crosby in every way. I've been watching hockey for 17 years and Ovenchkin has scored some of the best goals I've ever seen. Not only is Ovechkin superior in everyway hes not a whinney crybaby like Crosby. I hope somebody seriously rings Crosby's bell.

What do you consider the makings of a better player? Better stats or Stanley Cup rings?

listen to me tc and everyone else in this thread, i have been watching hockey for 22 years and no one in this past 2 decades has been more important to their team, and more elusive, skilled, and a true definition of a hockey player than ovi.... i am sorry this shouldt even be a question of who is better, not to mention last time i check crosby has a fantastic supporting cast golie and all, last time i checked ovi is all by himself he makes everone around him better

If you've been watching for 22 years, you'd know that Ovi is anything but "all by himself". The Capitals are the highest scoring team in the league...

Even if you remove all goals and assists that Ovech has on others' goals on the team, the Capitals still have more goals than a few teams in the leage. So, how is he all by himself?

I agree with Engrish_Major

I don't get your point they are both great players, they both make their team mates better.

Crosby just recently led his team to a Stanley Cup so I really don't see your point dlionsfan.

Oh okay now we're just going to start comparing goalies I see.

Crosby has a Stanley Cup ring and was the youngest Captain to lead his team to the Stanley Cup. You can try to down play that all you want but he still did it and Ovie didn't sorry man.

BTW Varalamov was great in the play-offs for the Caps and they still lost to the Pens, nuff said.

The rest of the league is lucky that the Capitals Kolzig era is separate from the Ovechkin era, or else they would have a guaranteed dynasty. The current Caps remind me of the 90s Penguins, who didn't have that great of a defense or goaltending, but had league leading scorers. Basically, they would just try to one-up the opposing team in scoring rather than focus on playing a conservative, trap-like defensive game. The 90s Penguins had a number of forwards to rely on to win (Lemieux, Jagr, Francis, Stevens), and today's Caps have the same (Ovie, Semin, Backstrom, Green). Their depth on the scoring lines makes up for their lack of a cohesive defense or reliable goaltending.

When all is said and done, I bet Ovechkin is going to have a short career a la Lindross. He needs to tone down his physical game. There's nothing wrong when playing with passion, but when you leave your feet to hit someone half-a-dozen times a game, it's going to catch up to you pretty quickly. He should learn from his suspension he had earlier.

To his credit, Sid did have one of his signature redirects into the goal. Problem was, it was the wrong one!

I think it had alot to do with our goalie... I bet they wont be using him if they meet the US again. I have to give them credit for the amount of shots on goal they managed in the last 5 minutes.... Stellar!
