Aight, so this happend yesterday in english class, kinda made me mad but nobody else seemed to have a problem with it so I'm curious to see what you fella's think.

We were in english and talking about poverty and the ways to prevent it, yada yada yada. The my teacher says "Another way we could help with the starvation in the world is to not buy imported food from tropical countries south of the equator. (She mentioned mexico in the list of countrieshere, which is not south of the equator, but I didn't bring that up.) By not buying their fruit and vegtables they have more for themselves."

Not word for word, but that's the details of what she said. That didn't quite make sense to me, so I said "Well they're getting money for the food they're selling, so it's obviously working out for them some how. If they didn't want to sell their crops then they don't have to." Too which she replied "Do you really think it's that easy?"

No, I don't think it's easy either way, their poor and will remain poor. How ever not buying anything from them is not going to magicly provide them with more food. What are your thoughts on this, my good sirs and ma'ams?

Humiliate her in front of her pupils. If you're lucky she'll quit with embarrassment.

It's a complex issue and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I don't agree with your teacher because of the fact that many of those country's economies are heavily dependent on exporting certain types of food, and many jobs in the country depend on the growth and exportation of said foods. Although I'd be open to hearing your teacher's logic on why she thinks otherwise.

That's the thing, her counter arguement was "Do you think it's really that easy?".

Yes, putting a stop to free trade will definitely put an end to a country's troubles. It's a simple matter of supply and demand. The world price of goods determines whether or not certain goods are imported/exported. If the world price is not high enough to facilitate exporting then those south of the border countries will not export their goods. If the world price is too low countries refuse to produce more than is necessary, or the price would drop due to a surplus, and thus would not export.

Ah well, I teach math, science, and PE, so controversial topics like that don't tend to make it into my classroom; but when they do arise, I bring them up with the understanding that students can and will challenge me on them. I'd definitely challenge her on that one, asking questions like, "Well what about all the people whose jobs are based around growing and exporting the food?" or "Well do those countries grow EVERY food that they need within their own borders? Are they not allowed to import either?"

I hate it when people throw nonsensical rebuttals into arguments.

And I dig your avatar, TC.

Sounds like a grade school teacher thats try to PC, but fails at it because shes too lazy to do her research. Besides she probably doesnt get paid enough to give you the best answer anyway.
