in popular culture, mostly movies the scenes depict garage sales as like big parties, and the owners making lots of money. I have passed about only like 5 garage sales in my lifetime and probably of the 5 times whenever I look they are always empty.

So really wat is the point of garage sales? Have you guys ever had a successful garage sale? Do you have to live in a populated active neighborhood? Whats up?

(random thread i know but deal with it)

I'll have you know I had an extremely successful garage sale back in the early 90's. I raised enough money to buy a Super Nintendo and Street Fighter II...One of the best summers ever.

They have to make it look exciting. Would it be entertaining to watch fat ladies on beach chairs and a bunch of ugly clothes and broken toys?

We mainly have garage sales just to try and get rid of all our old junk. We've made anywhere from $75 to about $300 from stuff we've sold.

To me, they are sucessful if they help to get rid of the clutter and useless stuff in the house and make a few bucks along the way. Usually not a lot of money, but worth having one.

It's about selling your old junk. Getting any money is better than letting the stuff just sit around.

If I was to shop at one I would have a slight interest in modern British war books, second hand good condition games, stuff like that. I hear that reposetion auctions are better.

When I had a garage sale I listed the start time at 9:00 am and people started showing up at 8 am. People are nuts for garage sales and they will try to be the first ones there so they can get all the stuff that is any good. So basically I was cleaned out at around 10 am. Yeah, I was pissed that people showed up an hour early and were knocking on my door asking if the sale was on yet. But I wanted to make money so I let it slide.

You have to live in an area where there is alot of poor people willing to buy alot or useless crap 2nd hand.

I live in Phoenix, Arizona, alot of poor people around here....alot of mexicans (Dont take offense, there just is) and they like garage sales.

So I see garage sales alot on Saturdays, and they usually make good money down here.
