Meh, over the years when listening to music i just sang along with the lyrics. Eventually was able to match it and broaden my vocal range even further.

hardto do this on the net but

-beathe in to your stomach area (diaphragm) and sing using it
- open your mouth to compensate for higher notes, don't open and close your mouth rapidly if the song does one of those things like "yeah-i-yeah" as it get's lower, just keep it open for the highest note otherwise you block your sound.
-don't lean back wards to do notes, your body may feel the need to do this, but you're actually hindering your natural ability.
-don't sing nasaly...treat it as if you're yawning almost

on top of that, you either have it in you to sing, or you don't

If you're really serious about it, you'd probably do well to see a vocal tutor. I think they'd be able to help a lot more than random tips from the internet (no offense to any of our smart people here :P).

Aside from the advise you've already received, one of the best things you can do is get a REALLY REALLY good friend to listen to you sing and give you advice. I'm talking about the kind of friend who will gladly tell you if you suck and that should never attempt singing again. Make it clear that you DO NOT want your feelings spared. After all, the only thing worse than a friend telling you that (despite what you might think) you really suck at singing, is making an ass of yourself in front of the entire school.

Well, if you're going to be apart of a musical, I would suggest getting some expert help, or at least help from someone you know is a good singer in real life. Nothing will rage people in a musical harder than someone who has a decent voice, but is always just a bit off. I'm not a singer at all, but I've played instruments in three different musicals in my high school, and everytime there is someone everyone just gets annoyed of because of that.
