See theres this guy, who likes physics and is a nerd and his name his Nima Arkani-Hamed. But the thing is, hes pretty smrt at thinking about things. And he says that there are at least 11 dimensions, which is alot but i believe him.

Anyway, theres this other thing called a Large Hadron Collider thats being built in the Europe and its a particle accelerator. Hes going to go there and figure out everything, and probably get inside it and race particles around and win because hes awesome.

Heres the story what do you think about that?

That's some nerdy-physics stuff, very smart guy. Are people going to make bets on these particle races? Cause I want in. Smart guy he is.

It seems that string theory is going to be the future. 11 dimensions isn't even that many, I have heard of 23 being used.

Isn't that just the string theory? The string theory has arround 11 dimentions and has been arround for years. Honestly, I don't buy it, it seems a little far fetched to me, but then I'm a chemist and biologist not a physisist, so I'm not going to argue.

Smart guys deserve our respect, even if they are serial rapists.

It is reminiscent of the saucy arguments over infinitesimals before calculus was put on more solid mathematical footing. But yeah, more than an internally consistent framework will be required for me to take M-theory to be more than an interesting model.

Yep, welcome to string theory. The NOVA special on it is pretty good, as is the book by Brian Green that it is based off of, The Elegant Universe.

Theoretical physicis is mind blowing.

majority of the world isnt ready to acknowledge the existance of higher planes in reality (or our reality?). people arent really conditioned to think about this sort of thing. If such a discovery was made new windows of scientific exploration would be opened.

Allegedly, the other dimensions are "compactified" and shrunk to a degree that they are inaccessible within our region of spacetime. Admittedly, though, I still really don't have much of a grasp of what compactification really is; none of the examples I've been exposed to help me grok it, and the math involved is out of my league.

Yeah, I've seen that one. Was thinking about posting it here too since a lot of people seemed a bit confused about what dimensions are.

The only thing that bugs me is - why should the journey stop in the tenth dimension, just because the human brain can't imagine the 11th dimension that shouldn't mean that it doesn't exist.

I hope this guy is able to prove that strings Can move in the 11th-23rd dimensions...

Or, you know, provide some evidence that any dimensions above 4 (or strings, for that matter) even exist :)

Boolean algebra was developed in 1854, nearly a century before it found a practical application in computers.

Besides, why do we need something to be of use? The word "science" comes from the Latin word for "knowledge", not the Latin phrase for "something usable by mankind".

Watch Cube2: Hypercube, that movie plays with multiple dimensions. But seriously I've heard about this string theory a couple of times, but how did they come up with that since those strings are so tiny they can't see or measure them. Doesn't that make it just a concept? For all we know those strings are held together by mini humans.. And how do they know that only gravity can wander through all the dimensions, why not light or sound?

Four.. The three spatial dimension plus time.. a good analogy.. an apartment's address. You need the x-axis, the y-axis, the z-axis, and the time.

I'm very curious what the other dimensions are, probably something the human psyche cannot register (otherwise we would have known).

Again, compactification; they are allegedly shrunk to below the Planck length and thus cannot be interacted with by anything in physics we know of. This sort of feels like a cheap argument to me, though, in the absence of supporting evidence.
