You have a pc and a laptop, a tablet and a smart phone, you also own a smart telly and now a smart watch.

Is there really any need to make everything soo smart?

Is there any point in having a tablet or smart watch if you have a smart phone?

I know you can just take it or leave it but there are people that will purchase all these products that basically all do the same thing.

Whats it gonna be next smart toothbrush where you can check the weather while brushing your teeth lol.

Do any of you own all these products?

Whats your view on this?

I own one of each except the smart watch.

I don't use the tablet, I know it is rather convenient but I feel so silly using it. Why use a tablet when I can use my laptop? (I know in some cases it more convenient, I just don't like it).

I doubt I will buy a smart watch anytime soon.

Ummm, I don't own a smart tv either!

Had a smart Samsung LCD for like a week but decided to return it. Good luck with that soap opera effect.

*looks at my plasma* I love you baby.

I just connect my laptop to my TV and presto I got me a smart TV.

I have a pc, my wife has a laptop and we both have smart phones. We don't own tablets, our watches aren't even digital and we don't own a TV of any kind. I like technology but at a point it just gets in the way (and in your wallet)...I feel that most people have a lot of redundant stuff nowadays...

I've heard that we'll have robots that will surpass the capabilities of the human brain by around 2030. That's...scary. We'll be the quarians and they'll be the geth. :(

@gamerguru100: in some ways we already do have robots that surpass the abilitities of the human brain.

But will robots ever have the mental dexterity that the human brain has?

Let's hope not. And if it happens, let's hope we have enough space ships to escape Earth. :O

I personally have a laptop, a smartphone, and a tablet. I don't have a full desktop or a smartwatch. In theory I wouldn't mind having a few smart appliances like connecting my AC/heater to the net so that I can control it from outside the house for more affordable bills.

Also I wouldn't be so dismissive of having both a tablet and a tablet, though at one time I certainly would have been. When it comes to consuming certain types of media like news articles or tv shows a tablet form factor is much more comfortable than a smartphone or even a laptop.

Tablets offer actual productivity on the go. I'm looking to upgrade to the Cintiq Companion 2.

@Serraph105: Why do you need to control your AC from outside the house? Turn it off before you leave and deal with it for 5 minutes when you get home until it gets to a comfortable temperature.

@korvus: I don't need it, it would simply be a convenience. Plus I have a theory that if I slowly let it heat back up, say over the course of a half hour rather than 5 degrees all at once ot would be less taxing on my bill. Again though you are right that I don't actually need this.

^^^^mhm convenience is the name of the game.

The only thing that would worry about that would be hacking.

if people are willing to buy "smart" product, then there is a need for them.

a tablet would have a different use case than a smart watch, or a phone for that matter. if a person is willing to pay for that differentiation, then you could say there is a point to having it

humans are building literally QUADRILLIONS ( if not more ) of transistors a year, they have to go somewhere :P

That is true. However, it is along the same lines as the Surface series, spec wise. Right now I'm on an ipad and it is feeling very lacking in comparison to what is out there in terms of what I use it for.

@Master_Live: the soap opera effect needn't be part of the smart tv experience. But yeah, smart tv capabilities are mostly redundant with the abundance of devices that people use with their tv.

Although now I can see those features just being part of what's standar

@comp_atkins: there is no difference between the ipad and the iphone except for size and the fact that you can make calls on one and not the other, infact you can do more things with a smart phone than a tablet, unless you are talking about high end tablets like the one mentioned above.

it's not just simply "what you can do" it's also how you can do it. for example, on a phone you can watch a movie but imo the experience is shit. a tablet offers a much better portable video watching platform than a smartphone. same can be said for other things like games, etc...

@gamerguru100: sensationalist hogwash i assure you my good man

current neuroscience is still in its infancy, so it stands to reason that any claims of artificial intelligence surpassing the capabilities of the human brain in some manner or form, is a premature claim since the brain hasn't been fully mapped as of yet

i'd also like to point out that some scientists, professors and engineers will sometimes say silly things in order for their project to appear like it warrants further funding, since their project is half their job/career in some cases

A toothbrush to check the weather is not smart, however a toothbrush that can inspect your saliva and detect an infection or disease and notify you and your doctor (through your smartphone or watch for example) is. It's all about connecting objects, devices, data and technology in a way that is more or less invisibly integrated into your life. That is going to be smart in the near future, it does not mean a gazillion screens you have to check.

I keep the smart away from my cellphone. I'm happy with my cheap Samsung flip up phone. The smart part I keep for the tablet because I want something bigger if I'm going to view stuff or type on it.

I create content. A PC and laptop are no-brainers. I'm not going to waste my time typing a 20-page report on anything less.

I also have a smart TV. It's fine for Netflix because I don't have to buy a separate add-on.

smartphones are great, and tablets make sense (though touchscreen ultrabooks make more sense imo). I can't, for the life of me, comprehend why anyone would want or need a smartwatch. Besides it looks plain tacky.

I'm kind of a "bare-metal" technology guy. PCs and laptops are great. I use a smartphone although I view it as more of a closed device than a computer - I used it basically for information consumption outside of the house.

I don't really see the smart tv draw. There's nothing like taking an expensive screen and cramming it full of soon-to-be-outdated processors, memory chips, and apps when those SOCs and software are a better fit for a $35 device that connects to the machine (or, better yet, a more capable machine that can do so much more).

Smart devices are a double edged sword. They give us convenience and entertainment and on the other side they exposure people to hackers and our cousins from the NSA and Uncle Sam. But no one cares enough for their privacy including me. The convenience of modern tech and instant access to information anywhere is very powerful and enticing.
