A couple of days ago I was at my grandparents keeping watch over their dog and house while they were away. I had decided to stay the night over there, and long story short, it wasn't a very good experience; came back home feeling a little sickish. Anyway, once I got back home I was tired and had a pounding headache. The first thing I wanted to do was get some rest, in my own bed this time. With that I neglected to lock the door, as it kept getting jammed and I wasn't in the mood to deal with it. So I just tried shutting it the best I could. I then took some medicine, and plopped on my bed to get some sleep. Like 10 minutes later I hear knocking at the door. Since I wasn't feeling good I figured I'd just ignore whoever it was in hopes they'd just leave and come back later, when I'm not trying to sleep. Well, I was wrong. I then hear the door force open, footsteps climbing up the stairs into the kitchen, and some random voice, that I've never heard before, calling out a name I didn't recognize. I was in a bit of a shock at first, but I built some nerve, got up, and went to confront this person. I go to the kitchen and notice some strange guy. He looked like he was in his late 40s. He then noticed me and asked if that name he was calling out for lived here. I explained to him I didn't know the person, and then he just apologizes and leaves (while tracking a bunch of snow in the house I might add). WTF???

I guess the moral of this story is to always keep the door locked, no excuses.

Seriously though, who the hell just barges into someone's house like that??? Especially if they're not even sure it's the right one. You'd think that person would know better, given his older appearance. Damn, I mean, it makes my heart race thinking of all the "what if" scenarios. Absolutely crazy.

Anyone else have, or know of someone who's had an experience like this?

Pretty hard, since I stated my door kept getting jammed, causing it not to close all the way properly. Pile that with the fact I was weak from being sick too.

But I get though, I made a huge mistake. You neglect to do something once, figuring nothing will happen anyway. :/

When I was a kid we lived on a farm at the edge of the woods and one day when it was just me and my younger siblings home, a couple of hunters carrying rifles asked to use our phone. It was pretty freaky having a couple of fully armed strangers in our home, but I didn't know what else to do besides act as courteous and helpful as I could. If they wanted to do anything they obviously could have, so I don't think ticking them off and telling them to leave would have been very helpful.

Too bad gun laws in Canada suck so we were basically defenseless.

Thats why you got to stay strapped

Im in my house. As soon as I see that that is a person I dont know who walked in my house, you pull out the Colt, aim them at them and tell them to Freeze keep their hands where you can see them and asked them why they have trespassed onto your property.

Aiming your gun to their face and asking them why they are in your house is not law breaking, #1 your property they are trespassing on (and they went all the way in your house, this isnt like they were looking in through your windows or walking on your back yard, they went deep in your house), #2 you dont know them and you dont know their intentions.

Bad timing TC, with the door problem and the random happening come that night. Nothing you can do but learn from it.

I know. Seems to be more of an issue in the winter though.

It's like my town is going down hill with each new year. I mean, just last year we've had people rummaging through and supposedly stealing stuff from our street's mailboxes. And the year before that there was a string of car break-ins, where multiple people on our street, including us, had stuff stolen from our cars. What's up with that?

What an idiot. Do people not get taught not to walk into homes uninvited, even if you know who lives there?

I didn't realize locking the door was something people labored to do, it's almost a reflex to me.

Had a somewhat similar experience at an apartment I was living at for a year with a buddy of mine. Wasn't the one home, but my roomate told me about it.

They were just chilling out in the living room when some random woman just walks in and sits down in one of the chairs. Everybody just sat there going "WTF?" and they finally decided to talk to her. She began insisting it was HER apartment and was arguing with them.

Can't remember what finally got her out of there. The lady apologized to me a little while later. Apparently her apartment was across the hall from ours. She has some heavy duty prescription meds and took a couple together that she shouldn't have so she ended up going loopy.

BTW she may not have been clothed during the ordeal.....

Hopefully, you learned your lesson. If you do not want people walking in the place you live, lock the entrances closed. Repairing that door seems like the most obvious solution to me.

I think he was just trying to damage control his burglary. I would have whacked him regardless.

@Trail_Mix: When I was a teen, I used to earn money as a house sitter. People would pay me to stay at their house while they went on vacation. There was this one lady I sat for who told me she had an unlocked-door policy, and she wanted me to continue it while she was away. Growing up, we only ever locked our doors at bedtime, so I didn't think it all that strange at the time. Well, the policy only lasted half way through the first night when a stranger walked in while I was watching TV. The guy just sat down and started watching with me. I assumed he was a friend of hers, but It still made for a very awkward situation. The doors stayed locked after that.

I would have made him some hot tea and asked him to tell me his story, or if he was in a hurry, I would've thrown on my overcoat and accompanied him.

I used to always lock my truck but every now and then I let it slip.

One time someone got in and stole my mini-DVD camera and all my cds. Around 700$ worth.

The camera was in my truck because I liked to film random stuff on the go sometimes (tornadoes, winter storms, fights, animals etc.)

So when it comes to security I think we should go by Murphy's Law; Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

A long time ago, during Christmas time my grandmother had Christmas lights by her door, and a drunk black guy saw them one night, knocked on the door and when my grandma opened the guy was asking "is this a bar". She told him no, it's not a bar, it's a house, but I think he kept asking and trying to come in, so she had to lock him out.

Because they were intruding uninvited in your house. In that situation, it's extremely likely that they're dangerous and planning to do something to harm you. Just because that's not ALWAYS the case doesn't mean it can't be. If people who aren't up to no good don't want to get murdered, stay the **** out of places you don't belong.

I've shot a man who intruded in my house. Was he planning to harm me and/or steal my shit? We'll never know, because I gave him no chance to explain. Haven't lost any sleep over it. I did the right thing, and the neighbors and the police officers who came to the scene agree.

Atleast you were some what nice about it I personally would of said:

"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. You leave my house now and that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you."

I have had someone just walk into my house, turns out he was trying to find my neighbours townhouse (which was right beside mine). Once he got in and realized it wasn't the right house he apologized like crazy and left. Good ol Canadians.
