It's better than the influx of pop punk that plagued the radio a few years ago.

I think he's talking about bands like the Hoosiers, the Pigeon Detectives, the View etc.

It's not really indie pop though and there's plenty of good indie pop bands: the Apples in Stereo, Magnetic Fields and the Field Mice for example.

What bands do you consider Indie Pop? I consider bands like Arcade Fire and Architecture in Helinski to be Indie Pop and they are not on the radio at all.

The Kooks, The View, etc... But the Kooks are what spring to mind when I think about it.

And I am not listening to it intentionally. I am just listening to the radio casually.

Yes. The genre has completely and blatantly ripped off the actual meaning of the word.

See, that's what I don't get about the whole concept of "indie". What does "indie" even mean? When you're a published musician who plays rock, what's "indie" about you?

Indie rock is basically alternative rock.

The ironic thing is that they call it indie to market it to different people.

Well it's sort of like a different style but, normally its just alt rock that is released on independent labels and I guess the artists are supposed to have more artistic integrity or something like that.

While I agree that the bands we're talking about have, the statement isn't true for actual indie pop bands. Check out the bands I listed in my previous post. Indie pop basically refers to indie bands with a pop sensability - i.e. more emphasis on melody/harmony, arrangements, songcraft etc.

Since the genre has gained popularity in recent years, the term has began to describe the sound instead of the band's status. Just like a band can be labeled "Popular" without having many fans, or labeled "Alternative" whilst being mainstream.

I would classify those bands as Indie Folk or Folk Rock, but both those bands have a more innovative tinge to them.

Well thats different. "Indie Pop" - Independent Popular or Popular Indie is different. That is what I would classify Arcade Fire under.

I'm sure you know what I mean. I have posted examples.

There's much more to being Indie than being signed to an independent label. It's an ethic.

As for the whole Indie = Alternative thing...

In the 80s you had the American Underground scene (bands like Black Flag, Mission of Burma etc.) Nirvana grew out of this scene and brought it to the mainstream in the early 90s (cleaned up for the mainstream, of course) bringing about Alternative rock. Indie-rock was a reaction against this. Of course, there's many sub-genres of indie-rock.

Hey :( I kinda like Panic!

"Things have changed for meeeeee! And that's ok; I feel the same; I'm on my way..."

That song is goddamn catchy. Although I like a variety of music, so I'm not a good judge. Like someone else said, if you don't like it, don't listen to it.

I don't listen to the radio, I have an iPod with an iTrip that I got for Christmas, and it emits a small FM signal in which I can change my radio to and I can pick the music, and I pick it pending on the mood. It's usually Metallica or Iron Maiden though, can't get enough of those two bands. Nirvana's up there too though.
