So for my Grade 12 Law class I have to prove that Osama was innocent...

Yes it is a stupid project that my teacher assigned, but he made every group prove a different opinion; some groups are also proving how he was guilty. It is what it is. The only thing I can think of is that Osama wasn't given a trial, he was just killed in his home... but really I have no idea what to say without myself sounding stupid. Any ideas?? :P

Gosh, my Law 12 course never had anything even remotely that interesting in it. Ours is all just garbage about wills and stuff.

Or am I grossly misinformed

Maybe it's a trick assignment and saying you don't wanna is the right answer.

Decades of info to go through, for a law assignment? right... it would take years for the best defense lawyers to come up with enough proof that he was "innocent"....

Sounds like your teacher is some sort of hard core liberal from the far left wing who disagrees with governmental principles and how the government takes care of things. I think you should just show the teacher the movie W.

Sounds to me your teacher is giving you an inappropriate assignment and should change the subject. If I was you I would tell him I had friends or family affected by 9/11 and the assignment offends me. If he still insists then go to the principal. What did your parents say about it?

I was thinking the same thing. This is an extremely inappropriate assignment that could really bother a lot of students and parents.

I remember my Law 12 class. Our teacher was so chill, every unit he just gave us the assignment for the entire unit and that was it (and one lecture). All I really remember is watching movies and stuff on my MP3 because the assignments were so easy I would finish them on the first class. And the tests were open book (but with so many questions to the point you don't have time to use the open book) and all multiple choice. Loved that class. Except for the fact no one talked. At all.

Sounds to me like it's a hypothetical assignment that encourages the use of creative arguments to undermine well-documented facts. I don't see the problem with it. Anyway, the right to a fair trial thing is and ok angle, I guess. You can probably play up a whole bunch of UN human rights issues, especially if you play up the angle that one of the best military force in the world, with essentially infinite resources behind them, really should not have botched a simple arrest. And I'm not sure if saying that he is innocent is a good idea - sort of difficult when he's confessed to things - but I suppose there's the whole 'innocent until proven guilty in a court of law' angle too.

Lemme guess: you didn't read beyond the topic header?

It sounds to me like his teacher is giving him an assignment on creating a competant legal defense for a man who's known to be guilty. That sort of scenario isn't unheard of in law and I would expect a law class to cover such ground.

Was he a US citizen and subject to US law?

Did he personally commit crimes on US soil?

Is there evidence directly connecting him to the actions of others that did commit crimes in the US?

Has the US ratified joining the International Criminal Court?

Has the ICC issued a warrant?

Was he captured in a theatre of war/conflict? And subject to those rules?

So, what legal system are we using to judge innocence or guilt and why are we using it/under what authority?

Once you get past what legal system and why, you can turn to the whole innocent until proven guilty thing.

And the first problem is going to be justifying why almost all of your prosecution evidence is going to be 'secret' and not subject to proper disclosure and cross examination.

Followed by how do you get a fair trial at all?

It is somewhat the same problem as Hitler Obviously guilty of bad things. But not that much in direct evidence and difficult to try.

You took a class in Law and don't expect to have to argue both as a prosecution and defence lawyer? The best lawyers are the ones who can win for both camps.

He never really did anything. Yes he gave orders to his underlings, but he is not in control of the human free will. They went ahead with the 9/11 attacks since it was their choice to follow his orders. Therefore, he is not responsible for the 9/11 =attacks.

How is this inappropriate? So you would lie to the teacher about how this offends you because of how you were affected by 9/11, even though you weren't at all? Seriously, America needs to get over this whole 9/11 thing. It happened almost a decade ago, a war happened afterwards where many many more people died. Sure it was on our own soil, but how do you think people in the middle east feel? Just because it is a "sensitive" subject doesnt mean that it shouldnt be taught in schools or used for class discussions.

Argue he is crazy and delusional and unfit for trial ... or he can't get a fair trial any where because of the universal media coverage of him. OH, argue the crazy -ass "Bush did it" theories, with the towers imploding only being possible by professional dynamite crews. There, that's the angle you want. A plane couldn't knock the Twin Towers down and how did other buildings get severely damaged, that whole schtick.

READING comprehension.. He said that his professor/teacher assigned multiple groups with different points they have to argue for, and he got assigned to be the defense for Osama.. I don't see how the teachers political position can be identified with this nor does it really matter one way or the other with this specific example...
