I just saw the chases Scene where one of the blue people was getting chased by what looked like a mutant tiger and my jaw just dropped. Is the movie full of jaw dropping moments like that?

I wasn't wowed by a single thing from the commercials. There's a serious hype machine going on surrounding this movie, and to be honest, it's kinda sickening.JustPlainLucasIt's a good thing then that commercials aren't movies. For example.. paranormal activity had an attractive commercial strategy.. but unfortunately it was a horrible over rated movie.
Reviews are calling it the most incredible and breathtaking movie experience since Star Wars. A reviewer even said that the leap was so huge, it was like the leap The Wizard of Oz took from black and white to color. Its gonna be revolutionary.
So yeah, its probably amazing, no matter what the haters say. As soon as this movie opens, the whole world is going to be talking about it, and everyone will have to see it.
I don't know. I don't think critics are the answer as to what I'll enjoy. The reviews are amazing, so I don't see why it wouldn't be good. I usually don't listen to the critics because they have a tendency to underrate films (imo). But if they're raving about Avatar (90% on Rotten Tomatoes), I don't see how it wouldn't be good. Especially since the movie already has appeal for me.

Well it is like 3 hours long so the 2 minute trailer really can't portray the whole film :P . From what I hear most that thought it was over hyped were pleasantly surprised. I don't have a huge interest in it, but my main purpose of going to see it is if I don't, and I watch it on DVD and love it I would be extremely disappointed that I didn't see it on the big screen.Reviews are calling it the most incredible and breathtaking movie experience since Star Wars. That's fine. But the dude I quoted called those who aren't excited by the film haters. I'm betting it won't live up to the hype. I think it's already living up to the hype. I've seen so many reviews stating that the movie "completely surpassed my expectations".

Most critics say that the movie is surpassing all hype and expectations. It is mind-blowing.
I like what one reviewers said, which is: "To say that I was pleasantly surprised by Avatar is an understatement. My advice to you is to forget all that you think you know or believe about Avatar. Just go and experience the world of Pandora."

A world full of panda's? :D That sounds funny i thought the Chinese people were against the panda's being used as entertainment. The clip i orginally said i watched was this

i think its just the amazing graphics and the overall scale of the trailers that have me going. And all of a sudden i am just now getting into the movie.
It's getting some pretty incredible reviews on Rottentomatoes... I'm definately checking this one out.
Someone said that Ebert gave it 4/4 biggest_loser
Oh, so this is just as good of a Sci-Fi film as "Knowing" according to Ebert :P

Yeah uh....about that. Critics/reviewers create the hype.;)I'm seeing it on Thursday in 3D. Although I've always defended critics, its kind of futile for someone to say oh it got 80% on Rotten Tomatoes or whatever because a movie like Paranormal Activity has at least 80% and a lot of people dislike that movie. Its all subjective in other words. Someone said that Ebert gave it 4/4 but I think he also gave Public Enemies 4/4 lol!biggest_loser
I believe Ebert gave Public Enemies 3.5/4. But Ebert himself has said that stars mean nothing if you dont read the context of the review. Two different movies can get 4 stars and one movie could be infinetely times better than the other.

I guarantee you, they dont. Especially top critics. Its part of the professionalism that goes with being a professional journalist. They have a code of ethics that they follow. And its part of their job to not get caught in public opinion, hype or anything of the sort. Say what you want, but they have their jobs for a reason.

Yeah, reviews are saying that it looks simply amazing.
However, reviews are also saying that as far as story goes, it's standard James Cameron cheese.
I'm sure I'll end up watching it, and I'll probably hate it. Good visuals alone aren't enough to impress me these days.

Mostly by nerds who love Star Wars/ Lord of the Rings and the like. People who are fans of the film industry like the fact thatg Cameron is directing and in charge of things. Lastly there is some new technology being used for the cameras or something. That's about it. The trailers are pretty dull but the last one I saw has me rather excited.
when a blockbuster movie like this has varied reviews it pretty much means that people that think action movies are amazing love it, and people that think actually good movies that require thought think its stupid. like 300, i have heard countless people say its one of the best movies of all time. ... gaaaahnimatoad2000Really? 300? I mean really? I would say it's good for a watch or two, and entertaining, but best movie of all time? That's lunacy.

Only a meat head would say that which would make sense not that a person can't get enjoyment from the movie even if they are a snobby intellectual type who needs to keep proving it to others.

I actually hated 300. Maybe "hate" is too strong of a word, since I appreciate what the filmmakers were trying to do. I just think that the movie really wasn't very good at all.
It was all just so shallow and cliched. Sure, it looked great. Except for the CGI blood. The CGI blood looked horrible, CGI blood ALWAYS looks horrible, people need to stop using it. Seriously. CGI blood needs to go to hell.
But yeah...the trailer for 300 was probably the most badass trailer I've ever seen in my life. Unfortunately, the movie just plain sort of stank. Lots of people still go crazy over it because it was violent and looked cool, but that's not enough for me. The movie stinks.
Avatar looks interesting, but what critics think means nothing. There have been many times when most critics hate a film that I love, like Tideland for example. Most critics hated that film but I loved it. People should make up their own mind about a film rather than follow critics. Their opinion means nothing. I will wait though before I judge Avatar. I am not easily fooled by visuals though, if it looks amazing I couldn't care less if everything else sucks. For example that film Lovely bones has great visuals, but everything else sucks.
On IMDB it's got an 8.3 so far.battlefront23:lol: Like that means anything. Very few, if any, of the IMDB community have seen it. The people that are giving it positive reviews are the people that are hyping this film to death.

One: probably about .1% of people who have rated it on IMDb have actually seen the movie.
Two: JFK has an 8 on IMDb. Their opinion means nothing to me or anyone I care about.

I wouldn't say that critics' opinions mean nothing. I mean, if they are any good, then they're NOT just giving an opinion. They're giving a well-reasoned explanation for WHY they think that the movie is good or bad.
Now, you can agree or disagree with a critic, and think that that critic is just plain wrong.
But what they're basically doing is intelligently discussing art. And being open to other peoples' interpretations of art is a necessary component of art appreciation. Movie critics don't ONLY exist in order to tell you what movie you're going to like, any more than food critics exist to tell people what food they're going to like. People's tastes differ. But when speaking with someone who has different tastes, I think that more people ought to at least LISTEN instead of dismissing them as blowhards who don't know anything. No one says you have to AGREE with critics. But listen to them, think about what they're saying, and sometimes you might end up expanding your horizons.

I usually don't trust the opinions of critics because they have a tendency to underrate films. But very rarely have I seen critics overrate films, and it's for that reason that I I'm confident putting stock into all of Avatar's positive reviews.

I dont ignore critics, I just think some people pay too much attention to them. They give good reasons for liking or disliking aspects of a film and most of them are not trying to convince you of anything. I think it is good to read them to get an idea of a film, but I know some people who say they have seen a film and said it is great or terrible but then when I ask why they say they havent seen it but a certain magazine likes it. I can understand that though, walking into a theater without having some idea of a film isn't always a great idea. I read what the critics say, but I dont base my expectations off of them. I try and not have any expectations, and sometimes when critics hype something it can set people's expectations too high so it is very hard for a film to approach how good they hope it will be. I think Avatar looks interesting and I am sure the visuals will be impressive. I just hope the other parts of it are at least watchable. For a bigger film like Avatar I read the reviews to get an idea of what i might be like. For smaller films though I sometimes like to go to small theater near my house and watch something i have never heard of. It pays off a lot of the time, however it can also backfire when the film sucks.
