and I am REALLY bad at giving speeches. Once I get up there I just freeze and my mind goes blank, even if I have cards to read off of. I just stare at them like I'm looking at some foreign symbols.

I've practiced a lot tonight and I'm fairly confident that I can pull it off, but do you guys have any tips that may help me get through it?

What i usually do if im about to give a speech (My god i hate speeches), is convince myself that "You know what, just get it over with, if i get a C, oh well, its just a C". Also attempt to avoid eye contact, just look at the wall behind them, or just above their head.

Just do it. I reckon that the tricky part is always starting it off, once you're a couple of minutes in you should be alright. These days however I don't really get nervous about speeches though.

Just get up there. Focus. Don't think much. Feel your piece.

And don't try to look impressive by 'memorizing' the speech and not referring to your cards or text. Read the text and look at the audience reasonably..

BTW is there a podium?

lol hey man i just did a speech yesterday, although ive always been good with speeches, the best thing you can do, is be cheerful before hand, talk lots beforehand, laugh a bit beforehand, drink some water, and you will feel much better.

No podium. The teacher doesn't want a barrier between the speaker and the audience.

BTW, my topic is on Video Games, which makes it somewhat easier to talk about since, of course, I know a lot about them...but still...I hate given speeches :(

Well thats another good thing, talking about something you know. And I'm sure its not some sort of competition right.

Open with the start of a joke and then finish it up poorly, make a joke about it being a bad joke, then near the end drop the twist that makes it funny.

Of course for all i know you are doing this speech at a wake and might want to avoid any funny material.

What I do when giving speeches is try to use my cue cards as little as possible and perform more of an "improv"speech. Obviously that isn't going to work for everyone, but you might want to try some time. All I do is write my main points on cue cards (or if I have slides/a powerpoint presentation I won't use cue cards at all) and then say whatever comes to me. One of the problems with trying to memorize a speech word for word is that a small slip-up can kill your confidence and lead to more mistakes and awkward pauses (it used to happen to me all the time in grade school), but if you don't have to worry about every little detail, you can't make those mistakes.

Well, the best way to be prepared for a speech is know what you're talking about and learn the easy stuff by heart. Then, just tell yourself that what you learnt is fine, and even if you do a mistake it really doesn't matter.

If you're breathing fast, take a deep breath 4 seconds, hold it 4 seconds and release it 8 seconds. 448.

lol. In Florida? That would pretty much be a sign that I shouldn't do a speech if it snowed here.

Don't fidget or put your hands in your pockets. Maintain eye contact with the entire audience but don't be robotic about it.

Don't memorize your speech! Use bullet points and fill in from there. Use the floor. A good speaker walks around a little bit makes use of the room. Eye contact is key. Take deep breaths before hand. Its not bad. Just remeber 75% of the kids aren't paying attention haha.

I'm assuming the entire audience has more than two eyes. That could be a problem if you are infact not a fly...

You guys won't believe this but when I was about to get up to give a speech for my American Literature class earlier this year (it was about 100 points) the bell saved me....AND, the next time I had that class and was bound to have to give my speech that day WE HAD A SUB and I YET AGAIN had it postponed. PLUS I had a whole weekend after that. So overall I got an extra week to do my speech.

go first and get it over with, then you can just sit back and watch everyone else get more and more paranoid.

Well, I got through it. My mouth was really dry and for some reason my leg felt oddly weak and shakey, but hey, I got an "A".

You'll remember how bad you do (if you do bad) longer than anyone else does, people will forget within 5 minutes, so don't worry.
