I think that if I would have eaten that...I would be dead, like...real dead

You'd probably have stomach problems. Then again, I do not know the effects of expired peanut butter on the human body.

i wouldn't be surprised if it's perfectly safe to eat. If it looks right, smells right and feels right, and on top of that tastes right, it is by all means right to eat. if it fails any one of those criterias, i wouldn't eat it tho.

I remember one time I got a soda out of the soda machine (this was awhile back, maybe around 1999). The expiration date on the soda said 1985.

Well A) it would have looked horrible,

or B) it would have tasted horrible.

So you would have caught on before you ate enough to do harm. Also if it didn't look or taste bad enough for you to stop eating.. chances are it wouldnt do much damage to you (Works for me:P). Maybe some cramping in your stomach for a while, or a case of the runs back and front.

Soda is almost like wine, it gets better as it ages. I had a Root Beer years ago that sat in our garage for a few years, best Root Beer I ever had.

As for the topic, why are people so paranoid with expiration dates? Peanut Butter doesn't get bad, ever.

Not every single food that isn't completely dry is perishable. Soda, Peanut Butter, Jam/Jelly. These foods are not perishable. Then again, im not sure what would happen if jelly sat out in the heat, but I never seen moldy jelly before.

Well, I'm sure it's loaded with preservatives. If the oil hasn't separated from the mixture and turned rancid, I'm sure it'll be fine.
